I've read several posts asserting that the 1991 Toyota Tercel alternator can be used on an early HDJ81. Discussions assert that it's as simple as a pulley swap to make it work. I just attempted it, but the Tercel alternator won't accept the HDJ81 pulley; the base of the Land Cruiser pulley is too wide for the housing by about 1/4" and prevents the pulley from seating on the shaft before it contacts the housing.

I'm wondering if anybody here has actually had success with the Tercel alternator, and if so, how did you resolve the pulley issue?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Absolute waste of time. I know better than to listen to anybody on the internet. If you don't get your info from a trusted source, just assume it's wrong. No way the Tercel alternator works unless you grind down the entire front of the housing.

I picked up a USDM 1993 80 series alternator and spliced in the correct alternator plug. You can also just get an alternator plug adapter to go from round to oval, which makes it even easier.
