This is true for just about every single vehicle, but especially true when doing it with the least desirable year of a vehicle. Also new paint almost always is a huge red flag for me. I’d rather have crappy original paint than a cheap respray.
Repainted new vehicle is a huge red flag - no one will argue.
However, for old off-road veteran this is necessity to preserve its body from being rusted away. Huge investment has to be well protected and it will appreciate with time.
Prior putting new coat of paint, all windows to be removed and metal cleaned. All weatherstrips to be replaced with new ones. Again this is simply a necessity and can be lots of fun for DIY enthusiast.

why do you say least desirable year? would you group the 92 in with it as well then

Yes 91-92 are the least desirable years for the 80 series. Rear drum brakes, only semi float, and the big one is the older engine/tranny combo from the 62. It’s not a bad vehicle per se, but I’d never choose one over a 93+ unless it came at a hefty discount.

Yes I agree about new paint being good for preventing rust if it’s an issue in your area, but I also see many cheap paint jobs that only last a couple years or they don’t do it windows out. I have no idea about the quality of the respray if this specific vehicle but anytime I’ve looked into getting good paint job in Ventura county it’s very expensive.
