Howdy folks,
I took this truck to a diesel mechanic to check out the smoke on startup and a slight surging at idle speed. We did a compression test there, and he said that Cylinder #1 was a bit low. He did not recommend rebuilding just for that, since the smoke disappears rather fast. The smoke does not occur every re-start if the engine is already warm. He thinks that the rings on that cylinder are slightly worn and that as they warm up, they seal properly. Also, I did a search on the diesel section of the forum, and a guy said that he did a valve job on a 2H, and the smoke on startup cleared up.
As far as the surging on idle, he said that there is air getting into the fuel line, probably a cracked fuel tubing or the diaphragm in the injector pump at the end. Both causes are relatively straight forward. A another search on the diesel forum confirmed these two symptoms as the main two things to look for.
However, I'm working full time, trying to sell my house, selling other stuff, and packing to move across the country. I leave in 2 weeks. I just don't have the time to address these issues.
With these two issues still remaining, I wouldn't necessarily drive it across the country, but I still drive it around town and have driven it just last week for almost 2 hours.
With my impending move and lack of time, I'd like to drop my price to $6500 and hope to move it quickly. I'm sure that these issues can be corrected and you would have one kick-ass truck. I would love to have a MUD member get this and really enjoy it.
