Looking at picking up an 86 4runner. 22re, 5spd, both rebuilt (including clutch and t-case) less than 15k ago. It doesn't start, after sitting for a year (heard them try to turn it over, it's a battery thing).

The problem is that it's on the coast, and has been consumed by the rust monster.

2" cancer below gas cap

2 1" radius cancer spots on the frame.

Every bolt (including in the engine bay) is rusty, and every metal surface not physically part of the Engine has surface rust.

There is cancer in the door jamb, and on the door frame.

There aren't holes in the floor of the tub, but any surface that faces the ground needs to be wire wheeled.

They're asking 600. Thoughts?

At that price, it's a disposable truck. Drive it until the frame rots in half, which it sounds like it's well on the way. Take off it what you want, then repeat with another truck. If you get a year out of it, consider it a bonus.

You're probably wasting your time trying to fix any of the rust. It's a fool's folly that will just be depressing and frustrating. BTDT.

Yep, me and my fiance are gonna go down to the coast, make a weekend out of it. I'm just gonna consider it a rusty vessel for a like-new 22re and 5spd. Once it literally crumbles beneath me, I'll find a straight body with crap mechanicals, and do the swap.
