EDIT: SOLD

I'm selling my 1980 HJ47 Troop Carrier. I've got 4 kids under the age of 5 and just don't get to drive it ever. The previous owner swapped out the H engine for a 2H engine and rebuilt everything about 26,000 miles ago. I imported it from Australia, but now have it titled in Texas. It has a snorkel, lockers front and rear, roo bar, 2 batteries, 2 alternators, and 25 gal aux fuel tank. I recently added a bestop seat with 4-point harnesses so it would be legal for some of the kids to ride. I'm located in Houston, Texas. Asking $20,000.

EDIT: Pictures of underneath and of the engine added below

It's got about 26,000 miles since the total drivetrain rebuild. I don't know the total mileage on the vehicle. No smoke on the engine. It runs really well. No leaks that I can see. Transmission is tight. 4-speed. I don't have any compression data. I'll get some engine pics up.

The previous owner supplied a STACK of paperwork that was every maintenance or add on he ever did to it, as far as I can tell. If you have any specific questions or concerns, let me know, and I'll dig through it and see what I can find.

I also meant to mention that I have the owner's manual, service manual, etc.

Also, I ordered all of the Toyota, Land Cruiser, Diesel, 4wd badging, just haven't had time to put them on.

Thanks. Very nice looking Troopy.
1. Do you still have the other bench seats? (Is it illegal, at least in Texas, to use bench seats for kids?)
2. Use much oil?
3. mpg around 25?
4. top, comfortable cruising speed around 55-60mph?
5. everything work--gauges, electrical, etc.?
6. use the 4wd periodically?
7. any anticipated or known repairs needed now or soon (door locks, knuckles, injectors, brakes, springs, tie rods, steering, etc.)?
8. how in the world do you manage in Houston without A/C? (don't have to answer that one)

1. The vehicle has two bench seats. That's all the previous owner sent me. They had removed two seats to put in tool boxes, which I still have. I'm not sure at what age/weight kids no longer have to be forward facing, but none of my kids are even close to it, so I put in that Bestop seat with the 4 point harnesses.
2. It doesn't seem to use much oil at all.
3. Not really sure on the mpg. Between the 2 fuel tanks I haven't been able to keep up with miles driven and fuel used.
4. Every so often I drive the troopy to work, and I go about 65-70 on the freeway (to keep from getting run off the road by other Houston drivers). Personally, I try to keep it to 65 just cause I don't want anything blowing up on me.
5. Previous owner put some after marked gauges in because some of the OEM ones stopped working. The OEM fuel level and speedometer work. I use the aftermarket gauges for batt voltage and oil pressure. Everything seems to work, but I do think one of the alternators needs to be replaced or rebuilt soon, because with the headlights on the batteries aren't getting enough charge. The dome light is out, and I haven't looked in to it to see what's up there.
6. I haven't used the 4wd since the first week I got the thing. But I haven't exactly put a lot of miles on it either.
7. Everything you mentioned is working fine and not in need of repair. The next projects I had planned for it were adding aftermarket AC (see #8 below), and a roll bar kit so that it's safe to ride around with the top off.
8. June - September are pretty brutal in Texas. It's not so bad if you park in the shade, ride with the windows down and kick vents open, etc. But if you park in the sun, just be prepared to sweat your life away in Houston.

Hope this helps. If you'd like to call or email on it, just send me a PM and I'll get you some contact info.
