Part #46 in the SOR diagram is actually the intake inlet for the EGR. If its gasket was leaking, it would cause an intake manifold vacuum leak. It is only found on 79 and later 2Fs. For 78, the inlet was in the carb above the throttle plate.

It is gasket #1 for the "J-tube" #2 that will cause an exhaust leak and ticking noise on acceleration when it leaks.

Here's a pic of the EGR inlet on the intake manifold below the carb, with the EGR pipe removed of course. You can also see how the gasket fits on.

Hey Guys, I know this is a really old post, but i couldn’t get anymore message to Pin_Head on this topic (20 message limit)? & Racer65, it looks like we’re practically neighbors. *Yes, the carb is a 78, and I found the pipe on the carb that normally connects to the egr, it has been plugged. Nice catch on the PO’s plumbing skills... his electrical skills were worse, but those are now corrected👍 Can I replace this type of egr valve? I noticed that there is no egr cooler on mine, is that because it’s has headers? I understand that finding matching manifolds for a 78 Ca. Smog FJ40 is going to be like Unicorn hunting.

You could get a manifold set and EGR for a 75-78 federal (49 states) or you could get a manifold set and EGR stuff for 79-87 FJ60 to use. A smog tech probably isn’t going to notice and if need be you can get a smog referee to sign off on the FJ60 equipment as the FJ40 stuff is no longer available. I would use the 78 carb because it Is compatible with the rest of the smog gear. Put a WTB ad on the classifieds page or contact Mark Algazy who is a purveyor of fine manifolds.

In the mean time, you could post your EGR set up on Mark’s “Wall of Shame” thread.

Thanks again for the info, I will call Mark‘s off-road in the morning. Id like to take you up on your smog pump offer, that is very generous. I will gladly cover shipping for the pump. I’m at 2556 Arlotta Pl. Pleasanton, Ca.94588.

I have it. I just won’t be able to get it shipped out until the weekend because of work. It is a ‘78 that has been commercially rebuilt at some point. Don’t forget that the nut that retains the pulley has left hand threads. Righty loosey, lefty tightly. The threads are prone to stripping.

Pin_Head, hope you get this before it’s too much trouble. I met up with FJ Tony in Tracy, Ca to buy an ABV, some BVSV’s, and smog pump hoses today. Told him what I was trying to accomplish, & he threw a smog pump & pulley (28k miles)!! The generosity & knowledge I’ve run into on this site is Amazing! I also found a nice exhaust manifold & downpipe that I’m buying tomorrow, just in case this EGR plumbing setup is toast. Thanks again for your offer on the pump, but you can save it for the next Newbie👍 Hope to talk to you again soon.
