Overview:

This 1977 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55 is in excellent condition and a prime candidate for a full-blown restoration. It had been in storage for the past 20 years and I picked it up a few months ago to prepare it for restoration. I've been driving it daily the past few weeks. It has very little rust and what rust it does has is in locations that will be easy to fix and the rust is quite superficial. The most vulnerable areas including the rocker panels, tailgate area, wheel wells, and area around the wheel wells is in excellent condition. The floor boards inside are also in very good condition with only superficial rust.

I've documented all areas where there is rust, but what you can't tell from the pics is just how superficial all the rust spots are. If you were to press your finger firmly on any of these spots you would be able to tell how superficial the rust is.

If you're looking for a pure, unmolested FJ55 to restore or simply enjoy as is, this is an excellent candidate

Highlights:

  • Original 2F Straight Six Engine with either 46,000 or 146,000 miles. I would make a case that this FJ55 has only 46,000 miles for a couple reasons: 1) The condition of the vehicle, 2) The "Warm Pull" and the "Choke" cables are extremely easy to pull out (usually these firm up), 3) All of the little parts are still there in the engine bay the clips, plastic parts, and little stuff that gets lost or breaks off so easily and 4) The front windshield is original with the chrome stripping and Toyota "TEQ"tempered stamp
  • 4 Speed Manual Transmission
  • Engine, transfer case, and transmission all serviced, tuned and running perfectly. See full list of fixes below.
  • 4WD high and low work great
  • Original sized Toyo tires (including spare) are, for the age, in very good condition. Size is 7″ wide x 30″ x r15
  • I have a perfect rear bumper (all three pieces) that will go with the vehicle. It's been blasted and is ready for paint or powder coating. ($800 value)
  • All glass is original including the front windshield (see pics of TEQ Tempered stamping on glass)
  • Includes tool bag, tools, bottle jack cranks, spare tire crank (which can also be used to hand crank the engine in the case of a starter failure)
  • Also includes a freshly restored bottle jack, which has been restored (inside greased, bead blasted exterior, primed and painted)
  • Heat, including rear heater, works perfect
  • All smog equipment is there. If you live in an area where emissions are a concern, you can rest easy. . .this FJ55 has everything you'll need to pass emissions
Recent Work Performed:

Carburetor completely rebuilt

Found an OEM rear cargo mat (these are super rare) and placed it in the cargo area. Rear cargo mat is in MINT condition
New OEM shifter knob and t-case shifter knob
Dash cover (most FJ55s need these. . .you can't get a full dash replacement, so this is the best way to go -- it fits perfectly over the existing dash and is glued in place. It looks really good)
All vacuum hose line replaced
New gas cap
Drive shaft seal replaced
Parking brake cleaned and adjusted and works great
New front rubber brake hoses

Known Issues:

Dents here and there. Nothing that can't be fixed by a quality body shop.

The wiper wash button isn't working (sprays the fluid). Probably a ground issue. (Estimate $50-100 to fix.)

The radio isn't working. It's not an original Fujitsu Ten AM radio like what you would find installed from the factory, but it is a late 70s, early 80s AM/FM Tape deck, which is pretty cool in it's own way. I was thinking of either fixing the radio or finding a factory one to go in here. You could also go with a more modern radio as it will fit a single DIN newer version.

The original owner stuck one of those clocks with two sided sticky tape just right of the rear heater switch. I need to clean off the goop.

Missing the air vent cover that goes in the cargo area ($25)

Missing the right defrost hose ($50)

The Defrost / Vent / Fresh switch is sticking. Needs lubrication and adjustment ($50)

Fuel gauge works but doesn't record as accurate as I'd like. Could be it needs a new fuel sending unit ($100)

Temp gauge not working ($50)

Nice Pig and an excellent starting point for someone, of whom I'll be very jealous of.

@AWESOMEvoltron
It's one sweet ride. Just got back from driving it to lunch and every time I get in and turn it over and run it here or there I get a ton of head turns. It's such a sweet ride...I'm going to miss it once it goes to a new owner. That said...I've got a 1971 FJ40 that needs attention next and that can't happen until this one sells, so....

I'm about 90 minutes south of Boulder. Just a couple miles off I-25 in Monument (which is North of Colorado Springs). Feel free to PM or call if you want to come take a look. All the mechanics of the pig have been sorted out and it's been a great daily driver. Really just needs a paint job, a couple small interior pieces (defrost hose, wiper washer squirter, vent trim piece in cargo area) and it will be car show worthy.

I need to stay away and unsubscribe to this thread now!!

Already have a bad ass case of swine flu.....

Unsolicited advice, should this grace the pages of ebay, which I hope it doesn't.

Paint the booster and air cleaner.

Alone, that may add a ton of value.

Yeah - I was thinking of doing that. I tend to air on the side of showing a Cruiser for what it's really like and not try to "hide" anything. Thus I never do the "engine cleaner" stuff and really just give it a bath, clean the interior, and hit it with Armor All. That way guys know exactly what they're getting. For whatever reason, that air cleaner looks like crap so a bit of bead blasting, primer and black paint would do wonders. I'll probably go ahead and do that.

I'll do you a favor and save you the hassle of paint and the hell that is ebay.

Knock off, say, $3,500 and don't worry about painting the cleaner.

Deal?

I'll start digging up coffee cans and calling in vigs....
Thanks for the offer. Just listed it so I'll give it another week or two and see what happens. Like I said...it's a fun ride and I wouldn't mind getting "stuck" with it if you know what I mean. Shoot, I can fit 6 people and all my gear in it, which I can't say for my FJ40. Once the gear is in the back it's basically a two seater.

Good speaking with you earlier. I left you a voicemail and text.

That's WAY TOO FAR away from you, man.

Plus, you're WAY TOO CLOSE to the coast!!

I'm just jealous....I'm trying hard to not pay attention to this Pig, because current sty demands all the attention I can give, but I can hear her Siren song from 800 miles away.

Good looking Pig!!
