I'd consider Toyota pickup drive train. Way cheaper than the cruiser stuff, and adapters are available for vw swaps.
Center rear output might be an issue, but there's ways around it.

Adapter Plate: Toyota W56 to 1998-2003 VW 1.9 TDI
He could probably get that and a w56 etc for less than the price of just an h55.
Not to mention all the fun stuff you can get for mini trucks, dual cases, lower gears etc etc.
Some bonuses to driving s*** that's more common than a cruiser.

If it's the ALH TDI (1999.5-2003) then make sure to do an EGR delete. Also, with a stage 2 Malone tune (goes up to stage 6 iirc) those engines have decent pull...at least in their VW application.

The acme plate has had issues with clutch wearing out premature due to alignment issues, Kyle at NWF just took on a line of vw diesel adapter kits and is making up some nice stuff. As mentioned these conversions can cost upwards of 5k.
