I Just purchased a 1974 FJ40...bought from some guy in Florida which it ran ok but wasnt acting right once I got it back to Texas. I knew I would have to do some work but body was good. My question is I was just given 305 Chevy engine. Has any ever done engine swap like this before? If so where can I get motor mounts? What is cruising speed for 4 speed transmission?

Small-block cheby is a pretty common swap for these trucks; never done one myself so I couldn't say where to get motor mounts but they're out there.

Cruising speed depends more on the engine and diff gears (and the condition of steering components and brakes) than on the transmission. High gear in both the 3-speed and the 4-speed transmissions is 1:1. My 1980 with 3.70 diffs, the original 2F motor and 33" tires is comfortable cruising at 65 mph.

The Downey Off road Mfg. Chevy V8 instruction manual in available here on Mud under the Downey Off Road link. After you've read it, talk to me about buying some of my Chevota motor mounts- - -easy deal.

Thank you! Right now I like to keep my 4speed but I have heard cruising speed is 50 but I rather get 65/70 mph if all possible.

As I just found motor mount and

The kit you referenced is made by Advance Adapters. They have a website too. Downey is most likely another source. He has been involved with FJ40's and v8 conversions since the 70s or longer. From your questions you should find and read his instructions so you have an idea of what's involved. Its not a small task. Once you purchase the big ticket obvious parts and the engine is installed. It will nickel and dime you till it's done. Back in the day swapping to a v8 was to use a sbc. These days the options are many, like sbc's. LS's, and Toyota V8's. Then they're diesels. You can use your 4 speed along with other 4 speeds or they're a several 5 speeds and even automatics. At the top of the 40 section are FAQs, along with tech links. Use Google search and the search function on this site. There is a ton of write ups on this site. Land Cruisers can go faster than 50mph, you need to do research to find out what you have & Use rpm calculators to figure out what you want in a 40. A lot depends on how your going to use it. IMO, A 305 uses the right numbers, but they're in the wrong order.

Curious as to what the issue is with the current engine. If it’s the original, I would suggest getting it running correctly and drive it for a while before jumping into an engine swap. They can get expensive and if not done correctly lead to all sorts of issues.

Current engine has major coolant leaks. Also who ever had it before put a eclectic fuel pump and it is causing to run rich. I was getting tons of white smoke and was causing engine to flood. I converted back to original mechanical pump now it wont fire up. When sending in to review the cost to rebuild will cost just as much vs putting new engine in. In fact to put the 305 I am getting cheaper cost.
