Just went through this with my '74 two days ago -- With the short side in and seated, have someone (DON'T ASK THE WIFE!) to rotate the birf/Driveshaft slowly while you try and seat the long side, remembering the end of the shaft has to come up a bit to clear the diff side bearing/gears... In she slides!
