I pulled the fuel tank, made the error of putting fuel with ethanol in since I don't drive it often, and I had to pull the tank to clean it and rebuild the carb. So I did not take enough photos as I removed the poly tank, I put it in there 20 years ago, but funny how you forget... at any rate, I can't remember if the lines from the vapor collection system go through the slot on top of the tank cover or behind the fill hose. I bought a 20 dollar fuel sending unit off eBay. Is that going to work, or did I waste my money.

I really don't recall what the setup for the old metal tank looked like. It was 2003 when I installed it, and I was using it as my daily driver, put 10K miles on it that year... but looks like a different setup than mine, sounds like there are a few variations of the 73. But I think the vaper hoses go behind the fuel fill hose and then under the tank cover, as shown in your photo.
$20 sender - you can't return electrical parts so you might as well try it, do that before putting the seat in.
