I have searched quite a bit but can't find a definitive answer....

will a 1972 cluster work on a 1980? specifically the speedo cable?

i have read that you CANNOT put a late model cluster in the early ones but you CAN put an early cluster in the late ones?

anyone know?

THX

clusters wont swap.......I am almost positive, the latter(like your 80) have plugs, printed circut boards and stuff, the 72 is not the same. I imagine with alot of work you would swap.

spedo cable.......no clue, the 80 is prolly a clip on, the 72 is prolly a screw on.

Yup, 72 is the last year with the screw on cable. 73 went with the clip on cable, but still ran individually wired guages. 74 came with the plug and circuit board.

Speedo heads look the same in front, but mount thru different holes in the back, as the newer ones incorporated the blinker arrows into the head and the earlier ones didn't. The earlier cluster will not have the notches for the blinker wiring studs to come thru, among other things.

As the 72 and older speedos become scarcer (now that new has gone obsolete!) more people are going to have to look in this direction.

I have a 79 cluster that you are welcome to. Not really sure that the amp gauge works but..

Thanks everyone for the responses... In that case I saw a nice speedo for a 1972 for about $30 recently... let me know and i can try and put you in touch....

Mace... PM'ed you.
