Just bought this rig from a 92 year old man who has owned it since 1982. I stumbled across this odd fuel tank in the back passenger side fender that looks very factory but a search turned up nothing showing these were an option. I can't imagine it holds more than 2 gallons. All factory bolts and all hard fuel lines are perfectly formed to the body. Can't quite figure out how it works though because one line goes to the emissions unit on the seat back and the other goes up to the carb area but is not hooked up.

Any thoughts on whether this actually is a factory unit?

Ideas on how it is supposed to be plumbed? I have to rebuild the motor so it will be a while before I get to it but it has me curious.

I’ve certainly never seen anything like that. And I most definitely haven’t seen it all

Factory, has to do with emissions. My 12/70 FJ40 has the same thing.

Great looking 40 you picked up. That thing has serious potential with a good clean & wax.

This should have clicked before but there is no fill spot on the tank so obviously it is some type of overflow tank for vapor or something.

Unfortunately it isn't as clean as it looks. The top has never been off so there is rust on the cap rails and bottom of the hardtop sides.

Congrats on the find. Good looking truck. There always those hidden "treasures" as you tear into these old trucks.
If you ever decide to get rid of any of that during your rebuild look me up. I'm debating on putting all that back in place on my truck...at least for aesthetic purposes.
