not if it's synthetic. Even conventional would be ok, if you were really set on using it.

I run the 15w40 now and I am not set on using it during the winter.
Just wanted some feed back is all.
I run conventional oil.
The 80 does not like synthetic.
It can get into the single digits here in the winter.

I assume your talking about Rotella T or something like it. They now make a synthetic blend 10-30 that I have seen at Walmart, but most guys run the synthetic 5w-40 Rotella in the colder states in the winter, but most of them never switch back it seems.

I use Mobil Delvac 15w40.
My cruiser did not like Rotella 5w40 syn.

The "for everyone but the USA" viscosity chart:

20w50 oil -7 deg to 38+C 19 f to 100 f
15w40 oil -10 deg to 38+C 14 f to 100 f
10w30 oil -18 deg to 38+C 0 f to 100 f
5w30 oil -30 deg to 8C -22 f to 46 f

I use Mobil Delvac 15w40.

What leads you to believe that your cruiser was not happy with it?

X2

Mine seems to like it pretty well. I've been running it for over 2 years without any problems. I had a slight oil leak with mobile 1 syn 5-30, but it seems to have stopped with the rotella,

With the rotella 5w40 my consumption went way up.
Which has happened to others as well.
Also developed an oil leak when using rotella.
After switching to 15w40 conv oil the leak is all but gone.
Switched to 15w40 conv oil and the consumption went down as well.

I use Rotella T6 5w40 year round, and have always ran synthetic. Was -35 here last week, no issues. Have you always ran conventional oil? Switching to synthetic later on can be really hard on engine seals, that would explain your increased consumption and a "not happy" cruiser. 15w30 is good in summer, and should be good enough for the winter you're describing.

Although not mentioned much here, I found conventional PYB (Pennzoil Yellow Bottle) to be a great oil for my 80. I have used Rotella, both syn and semi syn .. I had one small leak at the bell housing (pan arch I guess). I used Delo and had the same issue. Just put 5W30 PYB in about 2 months ago, leak has stopped.

PYB seems to have a decent following on the "Bob the oil guy" website. Any of the above mentioned oils are great oils. Get what works for you the best.

Just because it farts, doesn't make it unhappy. Mine consumes oil, but does't leak much using mobil1 15W50. Oil is cheap. But if you like the 15W40 conventional, use it. Just give it a little time to warm up.

Rotella T6 used to be the go-to choice for a lot of people because it was cheap. Now it's actually *more* expensive than Mobil 1! (Compare per-quart cost, Mobil 1 comes in 5qt jugs while T6 is 1 gallon). Mobil 1 10W-40 significantly reduced my oil consumption due to hardened valve stem seals. If I had a fresh top end, I'd be running Mobil 1 0W-40. There's no reason *not* to prefer a lower winter rating, so long as the upper temperature range meets manufacturer recommendations for your climate.
