well, if the start current is 3 times nominal, that should still have been OK.
Maybe the compressor is drawing much more than it should cuz old etc?

Is there any way to unload the compressor head for startup? Some of our commercial screw compressors do that to make the startup current lower.

This thread is great. I just got the 1500W Costco inverter myself. I've got the same questions regarding installation - fuses, switches, cables, etc.

Ary - I'm very interested in seeing your installation as it proceeds. Are you running the the main cable inside the body or outside along the frame? TIA

I'm running the main cable inside the cabin. I've got the cable routed, but fitting the actual inverter where I wanted to is proving difficult. I've been slammed with work lately so I haven't made any progress, but hopefully this week I'll be able to finish the dual battery setup and get things going again. I'll take pictures as I progress for you guys.

Maybe try the outlet housing found in the bed of the new Tacomas...its really pretty slick. This might even be incorporated into the rear bumper for true outside power. Just a thought!

When I inquired on getting just the panel housing, I was told that it was only sold as part of the entire inverter kit.

This is the panel that I plan on using. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=205-054
I plan on modifying the right part of the panel, from RCA jacks into a single 12V cig lighter outlet.

Arya, any updates?

My inverter/dual battery setup for the 80 has been officially put on hold. With the newly acquired minivan, money is tight and the parts acquired for the inverter will go into the minivan first, to power the microwave.

Nothing yet. Been busy doing holiday stuff, getting teeth yanked out, and catching up on maintenance for the cruiser. Maybe I'll get out there and install the second battery tray today. That's been the biggest thing holding me up a couple of projects. That, and money :o

Don't compressors come with an unloader?

As far as inrush during startup goes, it's hard to quantify. Rule of thumb peak is 8-10 times nameplate rating, but this varies with factors including:
1. where in the ac cycle the current starts
2. inertial load.
3. etc.
