G'day from Australia guys,

Got myself an LJ70 Bundera, great fun, but really gutless, looking for some information on engine conversions. For my needs I have found a 13BT would be a good conversion, I had read somewhere that it had come stock in some bunderas/MWBs, however I cannot find any information on someone swapping it into an LJ70, is this easy? A bolt in swap or would I have to dick around with the engine mounts? Also what would be a good option for Gearbox and transfer case if I was to do the swap?

Any advice would be great, thanks.

To fit the 13BT you'l need to swap to a H55f gearbox. Engine mounts need to be moved and so on, it's not a straightforward conversion. 13BTs came in BJ74 landcruisers (not Bunderas, sadly) which are incredibly rare and all 26+ years old now. You'd be better off looking for a 14B/15BF/T out of various Toyota trucks if you want to go for a B series motor.

Plenty of people are getting good power out of turbo'd 3L or 5L (2.8 and 3.0l non turbo Hilux) motors which will bolt right in but are quite expensive for what they are. A turbo 2.4 makes about the same power as the 3.0l N/A.

Personally I'd go for a 1KZ with the aim of later converting to direct injection with a 1KD head and pistons. This will need the engine mounts moved but you can retain your gearbox with a different bell housing. 1KZ-TEs can be easily converted to full mechanical injection and 1KZ Surfs are worth peanuts. People are getting utterly bonkers power out of 1KDs.

The L family and 1KZs are much lighter, smoother, higher revving and more modern than the B series, though the B in the form of the 15BFT(E) has outlasted them due to being a truck motor. The B motors in direct injection form are extremely reliable and will last virtually forever. The B powered landcruisers have stronger diffs and gearbox than your Bundera, though the Bundy mechanicals are up to it.

Cheers for all the info,
A 1kd would not be a direct swap?
And is anyone making kits to install the 1kz? Or would i have to get the mounts and bellhousing all custom made?

Bit late but whatever.

1KD I believe needs a bellhousing swap (from 5 speed hilux, 4runner and prado with the 1KZ), ages ago I read L and 1KZ have the same bellhousing pattern but that could be BS. Dunno about input shafts. You could order the engine mounts from Toyota as the Bundera/lightduty had the 1KZ in other countries.

In terms of gearboxes and engine mounts(how much they need to be moved) it's essentially the same conversion as 1KZ into 2L-T 4runner, or with a gearbox swap any 2L/3L/5L Hilux. It's been done plenty or times and there's quite a bit of info out there.

ive just got a 14bt and about to drop it into a Bj73 that had the 3b

Please document it, I'm looking at going down the same path seeing as a 41mm exhaust valve 3B head seems impossible to find for a reasonable price. For what it will cost I could go a long way towards a better, tougher engine that wont crack heads.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the motor?

If I get Surf 1kz half cut, would it be able to direct convert/transplant to Lj78? Because at my location, surf 1kz half cut is twice much cheaper than kzj78 half cut..
