Have a few questions and looking for some tips on these issues. Have a HJ61 104000km. The belts are new less than 2000km on them but it started to squeal the other day between 1500-2500 rpms. It's not all the time.

I'm in a hot climate 110+ everyday thinking the belts stretched due to weather. So what should I try to adjust first to get the squeal to go away? A/C on or off does not matter. I added a video think it's coming from the alternator belt kinda hard to hear. Where do I adjust the tension? Or do i Use a prybar?

Second is smoke. I can't see much smoke during the day but at night I can see it in the mirror when somone is driving behind me. Or at an intersection when idling it will smoke for a minute but then go away. Is this normal or is there somthing I can do to help with the smoke? Need to get this thing smoged soon so trying to make it smoke as little as possible. I could just turn the fuel down while it's being smoged? Then set it back after.

I'll be replacing the oil/filter and fuel filter this weekend. For routine maintenance no clue if that will do much for it or not.

**edit. two belts were way loose haha.. fixed that issue.

basically if you have more than a thumb width of play in your belt it needs adjusting the heat should not be a problem i live in a hot climate(aussie) unless one of pulleys making noise. Smoke yeh it is more noticeable at night with someones headlights on behind you so thats pretty normal. If someone has added fuel by turning up the off boost setting for low down power it will smoke oh and all 12hts blow a puff of smoke on start up just the way they are. Hope this helps a bit.

Sounds like it's running normal then haha. Both the fuel screws are wired still so I'm sure it's at the factory settings.

Anyways passed emmissions today with flying colors. So I have a US titled and tagged HJ61.

Soooo............. What did you change/clean/fix to get it to pass?

Its normal to readjust the belts a month or so after fitting them. Being made of rubber they stretch.

I have something to watch for that needs to be added to this thread for those who read it in the future.

Make sure you have the correct width belt. Here in the states, and maybe elsewhere also, most all the newer cars use a narrower belt than what is used on Cruisers. It is not uncommon for a counter jockey, particularly of the younger and more inexperienced variety, to automatically get you one of those belts when you ask for something of a certain length. A narrow belt will not ride within the pulley where it should if it is narrower than stock. It doesn't take much wear on the sides of the belt for it to start riding on the bottom of the pulley. When that happens a squealing sound will become very common when revving the motor.

A correct width belt will ride on the sides of the pulley, and not touch the bottom of the V.

For the "haze" issue out the tailpipe, when you change your fuel filter, fill it up the new one with a can of seafoam fuel treatment. I found this really cleans up the visible smoke on mine. You'll still see it in your rearview at night with headlights behind you, just part of the charm of driving an old diesel.
