I have a broken master key that I haven't replaced. It hasn't bothered me but looking at Scottm's photo it looks like I could just buy an Ebay key, have it cut, then put my key's remote guts in it. Does this work?

Yes. There are many here that have posted that they have done this. You just have to make sure that both the guts and the key belong to the correct year range of your Cruiser, as they have had a couple of transponder types. I believe 98-02 is the same, and then 03-07 should be the same (I know for sure there was a change from 02-03).

Good luck.

I've posted up before, and no one has been interested... but I'll post again just in case. I have the guts to two keys from a 2000, these could be put into a blank key/case (which are fairly inexpensive on e-bay). PM me if you are interested.

EDIT: Key innards are gone. Lots of interest, wish I would have kept the rest of my keys from the wrecked cruiser to help more of you out.

The ebay cases work well. Watching the screw on the key for loosening and using some blue locktite on it will help prevent the damage in the first place.

Tried it this morning. With the key alone, the truck will crank but not start. With the remote module on the key it starts no problem. I had just the key hidden on the truck, guess I'll be epoxying the key back together tonight. I'd like to replace the battery first, anyone know what battery is in these remotes?

The transponder is in the head of the key, that little plastic portion. If you don't believe it, cut a key and don't program it into the ECU. Try and start the truck and see what happens with the anti-theft system.

it will turn over but will not start...basically you kill the batter and beat the s*** out of the starter...

you cant just put the transponder close to the ignition, use a cut key and it will start. The transponder has to be within less than a centimeter of a key length before it will start..........believe me on this...

There's got to be something in the column that picks up the signal. Utahfj62 installed a remote start and to trick the transponder they just zip tied a key head under the dash.

yes there is something either in the dash or the steering column, but i am telling you it has to be a certain distance away...if it is too close or too far away it will not start

The battery in mine is a Panasonic CR 1616.

I tried starting with the remote part of the key in the truck. It cranked without firing 'till I put the remote almost in the key, then it fired and started. I did this with the battery out of the remote.

regular cut keys do not work.

or http://www.locksmithcharley.com/toyotapostflash.pdf (Adobe Acrobat reader required)
Has anyone had an ECM from a '99 UZJ100 (P/N 89661-60610) successfully flashed before? Because I bought a reconditioned one, and Toyota couldn't install it because they said it was already paired up to a previous key. However, the place that sold me the ECM says that these ECMs can't be reflashed. I'm not sure what to do...it seems I've been sold a part I can't use.

Just got spare key yesterday from dealer...

Gentlemen...first post. :flipoff2:

Picked up a 100 a couple weeks ago that only came with one key, the kind with the keyless entry.

Ordered a second key w/ keyless entry from local dealer, and yesterday they programmed it, so now I have two. I think they had to program both the old one and the new one, but not sure. Anyway - took about 30 minutes.

Program key and keyless entry - $41
Transmitter assembly - $200 (list $225)
Total - $241 plus tax

My key had a cracked case. I ordered a new key on ebay (just the casing - no electronics) and had it cut at Lowes (maybe Home Depot). I then transferred the guts from the broken key to the new one and it worked like a charm.

What baloney...if Toyo is going to support its stealerships raping the constituency, then there's no difference b/w replacing a Hyundai tranny at 50K for 4K or Toyo keys (seriously???) for $3K at any mileage.

I love the mothership as well, but at some pt. it has to give...$3K for keys? We're at the tipping pt.

all the above success stories are because they were not re flashed already; once done i believe they can not be re flashed hence the big price tag
