Hey all, my cruiser just hit 340k and still running great after a big job replacing the engine wire harness #2 after some squirrels made a nest in there last year. I am gearing up to do some work on the brakes and figured I'd get in and address some rusty and leaky front end components that have been neglected since moving out of the Rust Belt.

Power steering rack is on her last legs and appears to be leaking from both boots and hoses throughout the rig. Not seeing too much drop in the reservoir, but I can get the OEM part for like $600, and found lots of threads on the topic here. Looks like I'll be lifting the engine a bit to squeeze that bad boy out and hoping taking the wheels and other suspension parts off will make this mostly a 1 man job.

Brake Calipers are original and likely rusted together. Debating replacement with OEM parts as needed or a full caliper, rotor, pad kit like the Powerstop Z36. The trucks pretty heavy with steel front and back swing bumpers and usually loaded up for mountain camping trips but I have not had any issues braking with OEM, its just gets expensive if I replace everything.

- Thinking I will upgrade the upper control arms with the Old Man Emu UCA0010's to help with an eventual upgrade to 35s.
- Lower Control Arms are heavily rusted and the top coat is chipping off but power steering fluid leak seems to have been held off any major pitting or cracking. Any thoughts on restoring and replacing the bushings and tie rods vs a full replacement? Any kits out there for either option?

+POR15 all over the frame, bearings, checking on a CV boot leak, replacing the stripped out transmission pan and anything I can find while having her front end lifted for a few weeks.

Any thoughts on the brakes or lower control arms would be appreciated! I picked up a new work truck for daily driving and the cruiser is slowly retiring to be a full-time mountain rig but looking to run it for another 25 years!

I feel like the lower control arms look fine if there's no full rust penetration, can't really tell from the picture though.

I got aftermarket pads and rotors from rock auto, R1 concepts rotors and Bosch posiquiet pads. Read some bad things about after market brakes but those have been fantastic so far. I did use the OEM shim kit, though.

The caliper is probably something that is salvageable. There are rebuild kits for the pistons but I would just disassemble it, clean the bleeders and use a die grinder to break down the rust. Repaint it and you'll never know any difference.

edit;
Probably get new brake lines though that doesn't look great

At that mileage and your intention to run the LC for the next 25 years, might as well service your oil cooler housing and take care of the seals, that will give you that room to work more conveniently removing your steering rack. Get the PS high pressure line replaced as well - tons of aftermarket options for that for less than OEM price.

LCAs with that mileage is better off getting replaced, new front and rear as well as LBJs comes new with it. For your calipers and/rotors + pads I would say just get a new one, service your front hub/bearing as well while in there.
