For those of you who have actually opened your headlights to do this, how did you go about removing the lens? I've done several retrofits previously but never struggled getting a lens off this badly. Cannot even get the thing started. tia

First, remove all the screws holding the lens into the housing. Set your over to 200 degrees, let it pre-heat. Stick the whole headlight in for 10 minutes. The butyl rubber will be plenty soft enough for you to remove it fairly easily at this point.

Yep, there's nothing special about the 200 series. 08-15 are butyl sealed so normal methods work fine. Size is the only contraint, I've opened via heat gun and oven.

I've been getting a number of PMs with questions about this project. I will try to add some additional documentation here.

  • On my ballasts I had to extend the wiring between the ballast and the ignitor. Pay attention to the wire used as it carries very high voltage during startup.
  • The paint used on the chrome surround was Rustoleum Lens Tint sprayed on in many thin coats.
  • A portion of the LX mounting bracket will need to be opened up to allow the bi-xenon wiring connector to pass through. Be sure to make this opening wide enough as it moves with the AFS.

  • From the factory the low beams are turned off when the high beams are activated. I made a wiring modification to bypass this behavior but unfortunately I cannot remember the specifics. I’ve attached the EWD for the headlight circuit.

This is a fairly involved but not overly difficult project. It does require some mechanical and electrical sensibility. The physical modifications are straightforward when you have the parts in hand and see how everything fits together. I don’t recall using any tools more complicated than a dremel.

My LX is my daily driver and I have had no problems with the lights in the 8 or so years since I did the mod.
