Silly me, I'm just running syn of the weight suggested by the factory manual. Why should I do something different?

If you not having problems, it would be silly. My 94 does not like some oils and did well on others-- a victim of the mysterious vanishing oil syndrome. :D

With Mobil 1 10-30W, I had an oil consumption problem. Mobil 1 5-40W seemed to be the ticket and it was easily available for me at Wally World.

IIRC, some of our US suggested oil weights might have been due to various non functional reasons--US Gov. mileage concerns and such. I think the Australian recs are for heavier oils.

You are correct.

My truck does push a little more through the PCV when running 30wt vs 40wt. But now that I have a catch can plumbed into the PCV circuit, I will continue to run the 30wt and enjoy the increased fuel economy without any concern about gunking up my intake.

Oil catch can

Got a pic or diagram? Mounted on fender well?

Thx

Have you had a noticeable difference in fuel economy or is it a real but small difficult to measure difference? In all the weights and mixes of weights of Mobil one I have used I have not noticed a difference, but I never have put in any 30wt M1 by it self, M1 is already on the thin side IMO

0-40 seams to do very well in Cary's conditions not sure if it would be my first choice in AZ, personally I would use M1 EP 15w-50 in AZ, but so far I do not think anybody has found an oil and condition combo that this engine does not like as far as wear, it has a high volume pump and I think this allows it to handle a wider range of viscosities than most engines.

I would really like to try M1 EP 10w-40 but I have never seen it for sale except for on the web for a lot of $$$$, I think it might be a theoretical ideal for warm weather use.

There is a thread on here that Turbocruiser started that will show you a couple options. I believe it is titled "Carbon Control" or something close to that. A search will find it.

Going from Schaeffer's 15W-40 (14.5cSt) to MaxLife Synthetic 5W or 10W-30 (11.5cSt) I gained nearly 10% in fuel economy. I also immediately noticed that several hills between my hunting lease and the house no longer forced a downshift when the cruise was set at 65. This was confirmed in both directions on multiple trips with both oils.

I was shocked at the difference, quite honestly. I have been running various xW-30 oils ever since. And as you alluded, the wear metals are quite good with the thinner oils. So I really think I am getting the best of all worlds with the 30wt oils.

YMMV
