Looking for rear shock for LX470

Moving this topic from the LCDC9 thread to its own thread to get better visibility. @elkeye posted his damage (shown below) and then last night I was taking my shocks off and noticed similar damage. Not sure of the cause or how best to fix it but some speculation below...
