alternator replacement

Looks like I will be swapping out the alternator on my 1974 40 series. Engine shuts off when jumper cables are removed. Would appreciate any tips/suggestions as I am still learning the ropes on this machine. Searched the forums but could not find threads for an older fj on the subject...
