Transmission Filter Change Intervals::confused:

To all: I have searched the threads about this but there seems to be no clear answer to this, so I'm turning to you all for idea's. From what I have read in other threads it seems to be up to the individual but I would like to know what the masses are doing.

Thanks!

fj60- on the 80s (A440F/A442F/A343F trannies), the "filter" is actually a screen that can be cleaned and reused, so there is no real "filter replacement" like in other trannies. From what I've read, there is usually nothing to clean off of this screen and contaminants usually just settle to the bottom of the pan, so it is good to drop the pan and clean that out once in a long while, and might as well wash the screen while you're at it. I'm going to do that for the first time around 90k. My tranny maint. schedule for my A343F is: drain/fill 4-6qts. every 15k, fluid exchange every 60k, drop pan + clean every 90k, using Mobil1 Synthetic ATF. Tranny pan sealed with FIPG, I believe.

Beno, Question how do you install the pan back? Does it requires gasket or orange seal? more info on this one if you can. Thanks

You take out all of the bolts (14 IIRC), and then you get a spackle or something like that and slip it between--not too much though; just enough to get the thing to separate.

Clean out, then put Toy. RTV around the edge, put it back up, line it up, and put bolts back in. You got about 15 minutes or so of lee way time once you put the RTV on the exterior of the pan bottom.

Here are some pics:

First two are of the pan after I dropped it.

Third is of the Tranny valve body looking up.

Cheers.

:hillbilly I always remember that the good rule of thumb is to change every 20K.
Or if you happen to burn up some clutches.:hillbilly

jklubens- you're our local tranny expert (our main expert being Rodney @ Wholesale Automatics, of course) so when you say change, do you mean complete fluid exchange, or just drain/fill?

Thanks for the feedback so far, keep the results coming!

For me, I normally just drain and fill per the owners manual.

Right now, I've got about 2000 miles on the tranny with no problem. I plan to drop the pan and inspect the fluild and pan for the first dran and fill. If nothings wrong, I'll call it a 100% success.

JerryLX450,
I don't see anything wrong with brake cleaner to clean the pan.
