I have a pair of Hanna Sliders on my 80. Recently I've been getting this weird thumping sound on my drivers side wheel well, been trying to trouble shoot it but can't figure out what it is. The only thing I've come up with is the slider on the drivers side is rubbing against the sheet metal as shown by the arrow. Are sliders suppose to come that close to the sheet metal or is there suppose be a gap there.

pic isn't mine, took it off hannas website to use as reference.

is it the passenger side or the driver side? you said one, and pinpointed another. I wouldn't think they should touch the sheetmetal. Have they taken any hard hits. I'd also check the fenderwell liners. Mine popped off a couple of the mounting tabs, and thumped around for a while...

Opps, corrected its the drivers side. Not real hard just a few rock scares here and there. Whats weird is that nothing is loose under there.

no bounce or shimmy in the steering?

Not really steering is pretty stable, the thump seems to come from the area where I pointed with the arrow. I only hear it when I go over something.

yes, the sheet metal is in the way. When Ken put my sliders on, he bent the lip out of the way.

Check the cab mount. I have seen a few, incluing mine, where the LH front cab mount bolt is a little loose. It makes a knocking sound. You will have to pull the LH front scuff plate and pull the carpet back to get to the bolt head (which is undr a black rubber plug). It is doubble-nutted on the bottom.

So is it suppose to be touching the slider or should it be out of the way-hence showing a gap between the slider and the sheet metal?

Thanks Dan, didn't think of that one. I'll have to check it tonight.

Another possible thing that makes a lot of noise happens when snow or ice builds up between the slider and the front fender flare or mud flap or slee end cap. Vibrations from the frame and sliders are then transmited directly to the body and cab and make very noticeable thumping sounds especially inside the cab. Just another thought.

No ice in Lost Angeles unless he dumped his Big-Gulp on the slider after the babe in the Ferrari opened her door up into his slider....:D

Victor,
also try to loosen the bolts and see if you can "jiggle" the slider into a better position and retighten. I think you should bend the pinchweld out of the way tho like e9999 said.

I forgot to take that black trim off (that hides the cats) thinking it was just plastic. Well it's metal and rattles. Gotta take that off- but that's totally my fault for being lazy.

Tape a piece of paper to the slider between it and the sheet metal. Go for a drive. After a few thumps examine the paper for evidence of sheet metal contact.

Any chance your shock may be loose?

Have you pulled the sliders off to eliminate them as a cause? If the noise stops without the sliders, then you can install one and troubleshoot.

You would think I would have done that first huh!!! No not yet, didn't have a chance this weekend was caught in between retrofitting my house and making new battery cables for wifeys rig. Next up I will have to yank that drivers stide slider.

well, I had my rig jacked on the sliders this weekend.
when I drove it later there was a bit of a knocking sound.
Went under and there was contact again with the pinch weld (sliders must have moved up a tad). Had to bend it back some more.
We'll see if that helps.

I had this EXACT phenomenon happen with the Man-A-Fre sliders I installed this last weekend. With me, I had attached the DS slider too close to the three bolts at the forward part of the door (right where your arow is pointing.) It was essential touching two of the three bolts. I am pretty sure that frame flex and body motion caused it to "thump" against the slider. I loosened the sliders attachment bolts and moved the slider down about 3/8 if an inch and voila! No more noise.

Biff, I have seen a few sliders mount close to the body seam on the drivers side. Most likely the square main tube part of the slider is coming in contact with the body seam. There is some adjustment were the slider arms mount to the frame with the U bolt. If you move the slider down at the U bolt and there is still contact then bend the body seam inward an 1/8 of an inch, it will not take much.

The easiest way to bend the seam is with the slider off and use a large face hammer to bend the seam over (just a little as I metioned before).
With the slider on use a large flat head screw driver and pry between the slider and the body seam.

Please give me a call if you need any help.

Ken
