automatic download of service manuals FSM

To automaticly download service manuals for 1996 LX450 follow steps below. This worked on linux so I have no idea about other OS'es like windoz or macs. There is windoz version of wget so you may try.

0. you need the latest version of wget which supports saving session cookies plus an account at Toyota TIS
1. save the attached list of files to a file ex. urls.txt (one url per line)
2. login to TIS and download any (one, random) pdf from service manual
3. look at the list of current cookies at your browser and find one from toyota.com named SMSESSION
4. create a cookie file ex. cookies.txt and put there the SMSESSION cookie in following format (single line, tabs between arguments):

.toyota.com TRUE / FALSE 0 SMSESSION F0M6xHW55..........

where the last argument is a very long session cookie value you looked up at your browser cookies
5. run wget like this:

wget -i urls.txt -x --load-cookies cookies.txt --keep-session-cookies --save-cookies cookies.txt

6. have a tea or whatever takes 5-15 minutes (connection dependant)
7. thats it, you should have a full TIS structure for 1996 LX450 on your HD 137MB

Now you can process the pdfs to you liking. I suggest automatic concatenating them according to creation date and indexing it which produces one nice searchable pdf with all you ever wanted to know about your belloved LX450. This is a snap and I will not insult you describing how to do this.

This has potential.

Some questions:
1. How did you get the list of URL's for the 1996 LX450 manuals?
2. Have you tried this with other TIS manuals?
3. Does this keep the internal page links if you keep the same filenames?

If we can automate the creation of the list of URL's then we could build an automation library that would enable 'mudders to select the vehicle of their choice, pull down a list of URL's, subscribe to TIS, and automatically download the desired manuals using your process. Nifty.

FYI guys, this list contains not only the 1996 LX450 FSM, but additional LX450 manuals like the New Car Features (NCF), the Electronic Wiring Diagram (EWD), some training manuals, the owner's manual, the Auto Transmission manual, TSBs, and others. I recommend that all '96-'97 LC owners pull down a copy of the NCF for the LX450 as that manual isn't available for the 96-97 Land Cruiser and it has a *ton* of good information about the engineering of the vehicle; information you cannot get anywhere else. Very nice indeed.

We have not found a way to FTP files from TIS. This is the best option we have seen so far and, as of now, it is only for the 1996 LX450 manuals.

Standard ftp will not work. You need some sort of downloader/spider which can handle http protocol, cookies, and above all session cookies. There must be others than wget but this is what I had at my toolbox.

No. But I do not see why it would not work. As a meter of fact preparing a total list of all manuals for all toyota vehicle (all years) would be equally easy (apx 5 min job). I just did not need it and downloading this would take some time. But you can do it if you fancy.

I am computer stupid and do not understand how to do this, can someone post a "computers for dummies" version of the instructions? I did manage to download th windows wget, but nothing happens but a dos window flashing and dissapearing when I try to open wget. Besides that I don't understand about the saving a cookie file argument, etc.
