First , yes I read thru the FAQs on importing. Didn't see this question answerd. This is on a HJ45 or HJ47 Troopy, depending on dates.

Does the 25 year import rule go by model year ie. 2007- 25 years = 1982 model.
Or by date on data plate, Month and Year? ie. 11/1981 would be ok but a 2/1982 not be.

Dose that make sence?

On a differnt subject , it says at the top of the page I have not posted be for and is inviting me to introduce my self. I have posted before. Did I log in wrong?

Does anyone know where I can find this info?

Pretty sure they go by month and year. Although, in my expierience it seems like at least as far as getting them through the border goes, it's pretty much up to the discretion of whoever happens to be working that day.

You have not posted where you are importing to. In Canada it's a 15 year rule and it goes by the month of manufacture NOT model year.
This month it needs to be made in January of 1992 or older to qualify for importation into Canada.

Yeah, good point. . . in the states it also goes by month and year. . . .so vehicles made in Jan '82 or earlier could come in with the 25 year exemption.

Thanks guys,

From OZ to US.
I was guessing it would be month and year. But with this stuff ya never know.
I don't want to try and bend any rules. To many headaches if caught. I just wanted to know what to plan on.

Can it be started on its way if its one or two monts short of 25 years old? If it would have it's 25th birthday at sea. Or does it need to be 25 before it gets on the boat? Not really a major deal just wondering.

The reason I am worrying about geting it close to it's 25th birthday is I would rather a HJ47 instead of an HJ45. A few up grades the would be nice if possable.

I understand the HJ47 came out in late 1980.so I still have some room to work almost 2 years worth.

As far as the US is concerned, it needs to be 25 when it gets to the border/port in order to be DOT and EPA exempt- doesn't really matter where it celebrated it's birthday:)
Don't know about Oz's exporting regulations though. . . . .

I imported my 1981 bj42 in oct of 05, its build date was oct 1980, customs used the build date and everything went smoothly. so I was able to bring in a 24 year old model year with no red tape by using the build date.

Good luck

But was your '81 BJ42 a Canadian truck or overseas? The rules are different.

Thats true, but something to consider if you're importing from Japan, I think their export certificate will show the date of first registration, not really the build date.

Can you explain the differances between build date , frame date, and the date on the door post sticker if they use them or date on title?

When it's imported from OZ to US what date do they go by?

I believe they are all the same thing! It's not like the vehicles are on the line for months at a time. Build date (or whatever you want to call it) will be month specific. Model year is not month specific.

this truck was CND to US, I was assuming that with him refferring to 25 year rule he was importing to the US, AFAIK 25 years exemptions goes for All imports to the US for DOT and 21 years for EPA.

I thought Canada was working with 15 years a cut off date.

Build date can run well into the year before the model year Aren't the FJ cruiser all 2007 models since they were interduced in april of 2006?

For years the auto industry here in the states shut down in aug, retooled and started manufacuring the next year model in Sept.

From what I was told is that if you import a vechical that is 25 years old by model yeat and the build date is under 25 years that you can run into the need to use a RI, if the customs agent decides to be a stickler. Not much problem from Canada to the states you turn around and get it later, but coming in a cantainer from overseas it can be a big problem since it cannot leave.

I think there are different rules for Canada/US import export stuff. I know that here in Canada I could bring in most any new US vehicle (no 15 year rule), in fact here in Canada I believe all '80 series were US trucks brought in on demand. I don't think we officially got 'Cruisers after the '60/62 series.

Import date fudging

Just FYI, If it is a JDM truck (which some in Oz and NZ are - like mine :) ), then there is no date stamped anywhere. I had to look up on a website from russia what my DOM was. Even then, if they try to look up the frame numbers, the JDM trucks are missing a digit so they don't come up even on toyota or SOR's info sheets.

Basically, this will let you get by as long as the paperwork says it is old enough. When I brought my NZ 1981 BJ44 in last year, the cop that did the (2 times) vin check looked at the NZ registration to find the date as it was nowhere else on the truck.

Let me know if you have any more questions as I just did the import to Colorado.

P.S. The HJ47 came out around the same time as the major 40 series changes (8/80). This was when engine, e-brake, and some other small changes were made. Another big change year was between the 1981 and 1982 model years. Keep in mind that trucks from this year (1981 model year) may have one 'newer' feature, but not another as Toyota is famous for using up all of the old parts before using the new style ones. An example is my truck which has the silver dash , but no full floater or sedimenter even though it was built in 2/81.

Has anyone heard of the changes taking place in regards to the 25 y/o rule aswell (for the USA)? Apprently as of 1st Jan 07 the rule has gone back to 1975 for petrol and 1968 for diesel, this was from a source in california so may only apply to california, does anyone have any concrete facts on this ?

I just looked on the U.S. customs website and also looked up both the EPA and DOT forms (EPA 3520-I and DOT HS-7) that you file when importing a vehicle to the states and according to all of it its still 25 years for the DOT and 21 for EPA. Keep bringin' 'em in . . . . .:)
