BEBs, con rod crank bearing.

Been in touch with a local mud member who is doing the long block replacment for a BEB that failed and took out the crank.

He will be sending me pics of the crank big end bearings, he claims thier is some wear showing, although they are much larger and distribute the loag to a much larger area they do seem to be showing signs of wear.

Rob

Rob, this would make sense since the wear in the BEB will allow particles to be circulated into the oiling of the crank bearings thus leading to premature wear...

This cruiser was taken to a local dealer for a p/s pump replacement.. on crank-up after the pump install the crank broke at #1 rod journal...the dealer claims that these motors have lower end problems.... it was running fine before....

i would call bull s*** on that claim, the only concern i have heard is the one mentioned above... of course serious abuse, over boost etc could cause crank failure...
the power steering pump is at the front of the engine so i am suspecting something got dropped inside and jambed the gearing and busting the crank...

just a assumption...

where are you located? a new crank will not be cheap but if all it did was bust the crank then it shoudl be fixable. i would want to know if indeed the crankis busted or if one of the BEBs spun and locked up the crank, that repair is huge money...

Bull s*** is rite-on! They pulled the pan to verify.. they claim there is a crack from #1 rod journal( where it broke) to the front end of it...

If this cruiser does't sell on ebay..........

I have strong, very strong, almost would bet my life on it, feeling I'm gonna end up this thing when the dust settles.. do you by chance have a shaft?? or know of one?? so far I have only checked with SOR.. I really don't want to go there.....

That'd be me with the longblock dismantle.
Actually the bearing wear is NOT particulate wear as you'd see in an engine w/o regular oil changes or contaminated oil. Rather it is the same patchy delamination that we're seeing on the rod bearings. Sorry to ruin everyone's day but it looks as though the 1HDT mains were scat as well. That said, they don't undergo the abuse that rod bearings do and that's maybe why we're not seeing issues yet but, I think we eventually may.
I will get pics to you Rob. I'm just out of town for this whole week.

so you are saying that no particles were circulating through the oilling system? if this is the case then an oil analasis wouldn't have let you know the bearings were on their way out...would it?
shouldn't it be that in the later stages delamination "chunks" of aluminum should let go?

for this i am reaching for answers since i have not had this happen to me...

I am also loking at this cruiser. What is the cost to install a new cranlshaft and will the engine be dependable after?

A good used crank will be a $1000 or so and then it really needs to be stripped down an examined thoroughly which is 2-3 days labour plus reassembly nd installation.
Then there is a chance it will need more parts or maybe even a complete rebuild.
It takes a lot of force to snap one of those cranks.
IMO you would need to have $10k set aside on top of the purchase price.
Maybe youll get lucky and it will be half that.
And yes it can be made reliable at a price with someone who knows these engines.
If I was a US citizen I would convert my 80 series gasser with a good used diesel.

So, did you end up with the Cruiser? Keep us posted on progress on the rebuild :D.
