I have almost decided on the 255's for the LX. The 285 Wranglers (w/ only about 8,000 miles) will go on the 93'. With that being said and knowing that I could always throw on the 285's if I need a wider tire for the conditions, I want a set of narrow tires to go along. The narrow vs. wide tire thread may never end and I may never pick one or the other so why not both :) . I have limited the 255 search to the Trxus MT, Maxxis Bighorn, or the Copper STT. I would love some pics if any of you have them. I would like front stance, side view, and any action shots you may have (particulary any shots on rock w/ them aired down). Also, please talk me into one of the ones mentioned above. I want something decent on road (for a MT), good to great in snow, and also good to great on rock. Please help me learn from your experiences

Here you can see 285's working hard comforming to a small pebble. It is in the shade so you have to look hard. Oh wait you already have those, sorry. :flipoff2:

I have heard about this guy with 32 X 10.50 street/at/mt hybrid tyres who can work miracles on the trail. Since I am no trail whisperer I need multiple options. I wish I could figure which tyres he uses, but then I will also need his skillz

That's good :D ....

I too am amazed at the places Mo goes on street tires and makes it look easy.... I just got some toyo m55's in 255/85/16 for my 93 and I am putting the lift on tomarrow, if I get some time I will do some poser shots.... I do like the tall and narrow tires and the fact that it gets about 3mpg better than the 305 mtr's....helps...

are those BFG Mudz? What size wheel? Just curious. I guess there are not a lot of people running the 255s in the brands I mentioned above.

Thanks for the pics

I have a set of BFG MT's in 255/85 on a set of black steel tundra wheels for Mexico. 7" wheels are just about right for the 255's. Much wider and you really start to expose the rims to damage. Unfortunately I do not have them on right now but may have some pics at home.

Yes, BFG muds. 8" wheel. Not sure where you are, but I think Big O's house brand XT also comes in the 255/85/16 size. Redesigned tread recently, and looks like a good cross between MT/AT. The brands you listed are not large sellers, so the likelihood of someone already having them on an 80 is slim. The size is rare enough, and the BFG's are some of the most widely available ones, with a decent price.

Hi, how are you liking the Toyo M55s?

I'm currently running BFG 35x12.50R15 MTs and will have a set of stock 16" wheels soon. I'm leaning towards Toyo M55s for daily driving and travelling on logging roads (sharp crushed rock).

I haven't decided between the LT255/85R16 D/8 and the LT285/75R16 E/10.

Do you notice the narrower stance with the 255s? How much can you air down with 255s on 8" wheels?

-Steve

m55's are great... I have about 10k on them now and very little wear. they hum a little about 45mph but that is it. off road air'd down they do really well, and loaded on the highway they are real stable and take alot of weight really well... the only thing I dont like about them was the price....

3 mpgs more?

if that could be documented seriously, would be very interesting to know...

I kinda like the idea of 255s too, but I like good sand performance so that's an issue

i also recomend the m-55's ...i have been running them for 5-6 yrs...they are wearing really well...on split rims even...they are great in snow, sand, onroad...very superior, on rock if aired down...they suprised me...how well they performed....i too am disapointed to see how much they went up in price...6 years ago i paid 135 each (shipping free) now they are like 200 each...but even at that price i would get another set...thats how much i l;ike them

I run the same tire on my 94 80 and my 92 4runner on fzj80 al. wheels (16) and I LOVE these tires, they have a "D"load rating but the traction of this narrow tire is off the charts.

FWIW, I have these new ones mounted and next to my good year Wrangler MTRs (35-12.5-15 on 15x10 wheel) on my trail truck and hte 255 are actually about 1.25" taller than my 35s.

and the 8" wheel is as wide as you can possibley go (I have done rim edge damage quite often) so ELjefe is right on about the 8" inch max.

Do you guys feel the need to regear with the 255? I need tires but don't want to spend the money to regear and with the stock size this thing is slow enough in the mountains, should I stick to something smaller like the 285 or dare I say STOCK size? Or will the lighter narrower 255 offset some of the power loss with the larger diameter?

You do not need to re gear with a 255/85/16, it is basically a 33" tire and the width really doesn't have an effect. There are plenty of guys here who can confirm this. It will affect the speedometer and odometer slightly, but there are was to correct this if it is a concern. Search is your friend.

A 285/75/16, is that what you are referring to? It is just about the same diameter as the 255 you mentioned previously.

I think you will be fine either way. As far as the size goes, the 255 variety offers less of a selection than the 285 variety.

Toyo 255 85's on Ice

Here you go, pictures of Toyo MT's 255 85's on stock suspension and my father-in-law holding the truck up. :) Regear is not needed in my opinion, I just leave the power button on. It goes pretty well.

I like them, but they suck on ice, and they are pretty dangerous for the wife. She is a white knuckle driver on bad roads since she flipped our Accord going down our canyon road a few years back.

I am going to have to put either Duratracs or Winterforce with studs on this week. We've had some really icy days this winter. This morning, I went down the canyon and it was absolutely clear ice. The ABS was the only thing that would keep me straight for about 3 miles. I just held the brakes and steered while the ABS was pumping away. With the ABS working none stop I was sliding about 200 to 300 before the truck would sort of stop. I was afraid to come to a complete stop because I might slid sideways off the road.

With the center diff locked and the ABS off, if I just touched the brakes, the front tires would lock and the rear would start to come around.

Granted, this was extreme conditions, and no tire without studs would stop on this stuff. I have never ran the newer winter compounds, but I doubt they would work better then studs on clear ice.

I was having fun, but I was by myself and no cars were on the road. :hillbilly:

Great tires for summer, bad for Montana winters.
