Tire tire on the wall…. Who’s the best of them all???

I've run the BFG AT in a 33x10.5x15 on my Tacoma's for years all year round. They do a good job for my kind of driving, and do a good job on ice, just have to drive appropriately for ice. BFG is the only one I could find in a skinny ish 33in tire. The BFG AT don't work worth s...t on ice on my BJ-70. So I run the BFG MT in a 255/85/16 (I think) that are also studded. Haven't had any problems since on ice, but you still have to drive appropriately for conditions. Don't know how a Blizzack like tire would do on a short wheel base cruiser. For summer I run Cooper STT in a 33" size on a 16" rim.

i have run the blizzack and Nokia ice tires on the 70s and they work excellent ... down side they seem to wear quickly but what do you expect? they are a soft compound tire...

the blizzacks i installed on the big ford van for the run to Ontario wore quickly on the rear...the rear is 1/4" less tread than the front over 5400 Miles of highway driving towing a very heavy trailer at highway speeds.

LTBs

34x10.5 ltb's.....are you running a lift? or stock? i second the truxxus but have them on the 80. of course w/ lots of snow you might want a wider footprint for floatation.

How do the LTBs behave on road???

Unfortunately there is no silver bullet when it comes to tires. You really have to ask people what they are using there tires for and then determine if your use matches. I'd choose a completely different tire if I was driving mostly in snow vs. ice vs. mud vs. gravel vs. rock vs. pavement. If you are lucky you'll find a tire that excels at two.

16s are so last year. All the cool kids are running 17s now a days.:D

My idea of a decent tradeoff for my BJ74 was 37 13.5 17 Toyo MTs. So far they are excellent on pavement and gravel, acceptable in mud and snow, unknown on rock and ice.

Hummmm now then to buy new rims or not is the question! Anyone have some 16-17s sitting around? Good place to buy?

The local shop here has some M55s on order for me, but they are going to be 29s :( as I cant get anything bigger on my stock 15"rims... I guess the question is would it be worth the money to upgrade and get something else? or rather dump that $$ into a set of lockers...

How have you guys eliminated the issue of the bigger tires hitting the springs in a tight turn?

IOW's I can forget this tire not even close to the sizes I would want

Hey Walker, I won't get into the "which tire is best" debate ... it's been beaten to death. If you're looking for an aggressive narrow 15" tire that should fit your '74 with no lift (or minimal lift) check the swamper TSL radial in 31x9.50r15. Check with your local tire shop...I can't see a 6.5" rim being a problem.

Well thanks for all the info guys,
I finally went with the M55s (albeit in the 15” form.) I would have liked to go for 16” rims but my bet is a set of lockers would be a better investment...
So far they seem to be pretty good, however I havent had a chance to get them dirty yet, hoping this weekend!

Good tires. Many Mitsubishi Fuso guys have been around the world with them with 0 FLATS!

My choice would be the Yoko or the
Michelin XZY. 14 ply tire Load range G  the ultimate overland tire.

thanks for the feedback :)

yer, that's what i here as well.....

the yoko's seem to have a high recommendation by the fuso expedition guys.

Yokohama Y742S cannot be beat. The price is so affordable. A lot of tire for the money. And it's on the taller side of the 235/85R16 spectrum. Those were the tires that were going to go on my FJ60 before I sold it. :crybaby:

that's great the Y742S is on the tall side:)

for me, durability is a priority followed by mud and snow performance.
