Can I get some pictures of rear bench seats that are mounted over the fender. I'm looking for a bench seat that is wider than the J**P TJ seat and want to keep space below the seats to store stuff.

I'd like to find a junkyard seat that has seating for three with integrated seat belts. Between the tubs is around 41" but going above the fenders gives about 60" of space to work with. Of course the fenders are in the way but my kids can deal with it! :)

I need to find something with a low back so it doesn't sit way high.

Anyway, any pics or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is the link to all the rear seat threads. I don't have a picture for you but in case you didn't already check it out here it is.

It sounds like you could build the storage box you want then built a tube or square frame above it that attaches to the roll cage and or body and then attach any seat you want to. As long as you leave plenty of head room from the roll bars the sky is the limit.

I'm assuming this is for an FJ40 and in that case rear seats are still a frontier of undiscovered possibilities. I went with the fold up Samurai seat. I guess I could build a box to go behind it if I wanted to. I have 6x9 speakers on the fenders.

I've been through all the seat posts there are I think. I'm looking for a seat that will stretch all the way across the fenders but not be too tall. The best candidate I've found so far is the Beard rear bench seat. I can get them in exactly the width I want and they are only 24" tall in the rear and are designed shorter in the front to give additional legroom. The only thing is they are $$$$.

My plan is to make a cradle that suspends across the fenders so that the area under the seats is left open. For me that would be more usable space than having a storage box.

Like I stated above, I want to have seating for three small kids. The TJ seat is only like 40" wide with belts for two. That gives 20" of seating per person. If I can come close to a seat that goes tub side to tub side I'll have the same thing for three people with storage area under the seat.

I was hoping that somebody has found a seat that works well in this application but maybe this is new ground??

let me see if i can post a pic..... i used a dodge caravan seat came out good...

Thanks for the picture. That's the type of installation I'm looking to do. Do you have a measurement of the height of the back of the seat for comparison sake?

Any others?

Just passing some personal experience with rear seating.

If your only going to have small kids in the back, a seat mounted on the rear fenders will probably be fine, given none of the children are taller than 4'6" and/or you won't be running a top on your rig.

I like the stock jump seats (fender mounted) for the classic look, but if my top is on I personally think they're basically useless unless you have kids back there under 4'6" as stated earlier.

p.s. I think the type of seat (forward facing) your looking into is also quite a bit safer than the factory jump seats.

na i fit back there with top on i'm 6'2 sat it back there figured about where it needs to be... left room for the rear angled the bottom of it up a hair and bam 30 dollar seat works great.....yea troop seats do look great but only 4'6 person can sit comfy....

So what your saying is you shouldn't be any more than 4'6" to sit on the side/fender mounted jump seat, but you could easily fit as big as 6'2" if you span a seat from left fender to right fender at the EXACT same height.

I'd give you maybe 5 minutes on a trail run sitting in a seat like that at 6'2";)

By the way, got any pics of yourself sitting in that seat with your top on?

I don't have a pic, but I used a rear van seat too. The only difference is I faced it rear wards. Much easier for the kids to get in and out. The foot room is better too. I also like the fact they can wave bye bye at the heeps as I go around them. :grinpimp:

Came across this post I started a while back. I ended up going with a Beard bench seat. I fabbed up a bracket for the seat and three seatbelts. Super comfy and the kids love it. The good thing about it is it's fairly short front to back. Being over the fenders it's tight for adults.

Reviving this very old thread.. any pics you could post? also, how much did it end up costing you? I'll google the company. Looking back, you happy with your choice? I have same dilemma with 3 kids, age 7, 5, 3.

Thanks

Here's my set up. The seat sits on the wheel wells and is from a full size Chrysler van. It is 54" across and seats three kids very comfortably. It is still just mocked up in these photos as I haven't had a mounting bracket built yet.

NICE!!

If it's over the wheel well, how high up are the kids sitting. Obscure your rear view any?

What kind of seatbelts are those? Are those Wesco?

THANKS FOR THE PICS!
