What problems will I run into installing a 84 3b 4 speed and split case in a 79 40. I have engine mounts from a 3b already but is the trans and transfercase alot longer I know there is not a parking brake on the xcase. but is this viable swap or will the driveshaft end up to short?
Driveshaft isn't a big deal my friend. I have been drinking, but you should have a 4 speed bell housing in your truck already, so an 84 4 speed tranny should bolt right up. Do you really need the 4 speed or just the split case?
Ultimately, they say a split case is stronger than what your truck came with, so it's a good bet. I think you should be able to bolt what you are asking about right up without problems. The only question mark here might be if there's something different with the length of the drivetrain because it's from a diesel. Hopefully others will chime in to confirm...
The transmission and tfr should not be an issue. Since you have the luxury of installing your own motor mounts during the swap, you have the superior opportunity of making SURE that it is not an issue.
Make sure to take LOTS of MUD-friendly pics during the install.
I think a split case is a split case, whether it's from a 40 or a 60. My 40 is an '81, and I believe that an '81 FJ60 rolled off the line with the exact same drivetrain.
If it's an early '84 w/ short 4-speed, then it's a bolt in. sometime in 84 Land Cruisers started shipping w/ the long 4speed that looks like a H55. Putting the long tranny in is a bit of a PITA. The case ends up rubbing the fuel tank, and rear d-shaft is silly short, especially if the vehicle has any lift.
Would you know the dims on the early/late transmission difference long/short, would the xfcase shifters be the same/same location from the 60 to the 40?If I have to get parts it would be great to know before I get there. Thanks
The FJ60 transmission shifter is in the same location in all 60/70 series trucks. It is several inches behind the 40/50 series shifter. If the tranny is a 4-speed, the 40 top cover can be swapped on to get the shifter to come through the floor in the stock location
I think the t-case shifter is also further back on all split cases, but I think it is even further back on the 5-speed variants.
I don't know where it would line up on a 40, but in a 60, the shifter location comes out the same. The arms of the shifter are longer and angled differently but it comes up in the same location in the floor. So, logically, in an FJ40, even though the shifters are different, the location of the shift know should be about the same.
I would not consider using the longer varient 4 speed tranny in an FJ40-there is no reason to do that given the relative cheapness of the "short" 81-84 H42s.
Thanks for the great info it will help alot in this conversion, any dimensions on the two different lenghts of the transmissions also it looks like I will need a splitcase shifter from a 40 if I am understanding this right.
I'm not gonna look it up for you. Check the fiche to see if there is a different shifter for 81-84BJ60, compared to 81-later B/FJ40. If they're the same, then it should come close to fitting your '79 tunnel cover.
Also, check fiche for a different tunnel cover 79-80 vs 81-later.
I'll have to check with some one who has a fiche for these trucks, if I go to my local toyota dealer they can't be bothered with looking up things for me they are a PITA But thanks for the info so far.
On the issue with the ebrake I was going to look for the parts to put the brake back on the rear of the transfercase I was told there were parts available to do this but I haven't got there yet. anyone done this?

Yes I was just searching and found that they are $500.+ that is kind of steep so I will be thinking of something else, how about the driveshaft disc brake setup anygood?
