I am interested in knowing what is on the end of my '65 Steering column and how it connects to the manual steering box. Yes, I know the steering box, but more importantly the shaft.

Any info would be awesome! Even better if someone has a picture laying around. My old crusty manual wasn't much service and I did do a search. But I will willing accept the "do a search" answer if I missed it.

This is my daily driver and tearing everything apart right now is not a good idea.

Thanks guys,

Dave

The worm gear is part of the steering shaft and is supported by two roller bearings top and bottom of the worm gear...

Which is to say that the steering shaft is part of the worm gear, with ONE bearing at either end of the worm. ;) Pretty much ANYBODY who asks is trying to find out if it is really as much of a PITA to take it out of the truck as it looks.

Answer = YES!;p

Great to hear that I haven't even started with my uphill journey. Nice to have 2 of the wisest cruiser guys on the planet helping me out.

Yep, all this info helps. Now know starting to get a better idea.

You can't convert that column to power steering, I'd yank it...box and column has to come out as one piece...stick in a late model w/ps.

Yes  You can go to mini power and use your old collum I just did it ! you cut your old shaft off at the box and weld it to a new adapter and bolt up rag joint, used a bushing in the old column , I have a new column plate for the fire wall , and your done...

warrior_1515 do you want my old steering box for parts ? it's clean not alot of miles on it, shaft has been cut off ? PM me :grinpimp: JC

My bad...I gues it was just too much trouble for me since I had a couple of late model parts trucks. [

Sorry for the hijack, but Dusty do you have Pic's of your project to put your PS in? I've asked around a bit, but most people have the newer model column's.

Thanks,

Brian

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think I need the parts right now.

I'm asking cause I want my cake and be able to eat it till I am realy fat.

Yes, PS, Column Shift and PTO winch.

I've read plenty on how this can't be done, but what better resource than to use the open minded gurus here on mud.

Anyways, I am hunting down a Scout II PS Box and scratching my head on the rest. I'll keep you guys posted on what I come up with.

Dave

Dave,

I have the exact same i.e. column shift and PTO winch. If you come across a how, I'd love to hear about it. I haven't heard of it ever being done.
