Picked-up a Tamiya 1:24 scale model kit of a FZJ80 with "Sport Options", and I started on her last night.

Once again I'm floored by Tamiya's attention to detail.

I'm at a stand-still because this truck is going to be the reproduction of my next 80, and as I haven't yet got one, I'm waiting to decide the colour combination.

I just wanted to show the detail in the lifted suspension. The kit comes with a scale 3" lift and 33" tires. The springs are steel and all the components (except shocks and steering stabilizer) function like the real deal. I haven't installed the OME shocks yet, because I'm out of yellow paint, but here's the preliminary assembly:

birfs look nice and clean ;) I say you start fabbing some sliders and rr bumper!

Looks good! So Where did you find it. I need another one to complement my 1/24 scale Red FJ80 w/ soprt Options.

Here's a Tamiya FJ80 w/o sport options on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Classic-Toyota-...oryZ2585QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Found it on eBay some time ago...

Yeah, I'll be fabbing sliders out of the left-over "trees" the parts come attached to. If I can find enough surplus "round stock" around here, I may even do the exo I'm planning for the real deal.

And of course I'll be painting the control arm bushings yellow!

Gbell, how did you detail the grille? I want to do the same (even though much of the grille will be obscured by the teeny tiny ARB bull bar and 8" foglights :D ).

I hope to make an ARB and a Kaymar for it to match my rig also. So the bumpers aren't even glued on yet.

The whole grill on mine was chrome, so I just used flat black over the parts of it that didn't need to be chrome. I just had a tiny brush (and maybe even a tooth pick) and steady hand around the TOYOTA on the grill. I just had the paint thinner near by just incase I had to pull any paint out of the emblem. Then I glued the headlights in. Also, I used all enamel Testors paints, as I don't like the acrylic ones (They seem to be too thin, requiring many coats)

woohoo, talkin about toys in the 80 section

What's next, chattin about the barbies to put in them?

As long as the barbies arn't as fugly as the ones in your avatar!!!

as for larger tires, ebay has some super swampers that are ~38". They look to be copies of aoshima's tire

My not completed one:

If anyone's interested, I have a new kit w/'Sport Options'. .. #24122

Shoot me a PM with a decent offer. These kits are no longer in production and getting very hard to find.

So. I finally painted and added some details to make it more like mine. I know they aren't perfect, but close enough for working with metal&plastic for me. Enjoy..

I think I need more weight to flex very well:

Okay.... Kind of shelved this project for a while, but picked it up again last week.

ALMOST finished. I made a rear bumper/carrier (complete with a K-40 antenna), sliders, and I tinted the windows (using Tamiya's "Smoke" spray paint). I cut out the front windows because they didn't look right with the rear windows tinted. The irony is that the front windows on my full-size Cruiser are both stuck in the closed position.

I still need to paint the front signals and the fender marker lights - I ran out of orange paint.

Next will be an "off-road" base and a plexi case (to keep the dust off - you can see how pet dander gets all over this kit!).

The only problem I have it it's way too clean. Anyone have any good tips for adding a realistic-looking "mud" effect? I want to spatter the underside, tires, and body with mud. I don'[t have an airbrush, though.

I will probably shorten a spring or two to add some "flex" once the base is made. The suspension actually flexes, but there's not enough weight to make any of the springs compress on their own.

i have one, but managed to loose the coil springs.

I lost a coil on a different Tamiya kit once, and made a new spring from the spring of a Bic pen.
