I am 100% serious about making a trip out west this year. Laura's got relatives in the southwest and I'd like to see both Moab as well as the Rockies. I'm thinking somewhere around a solid 4 weeks off to make the trip out there, run Cruise Moab, visit Laura's relatives and drive back. Moab is usually the first week in May.

Who else is seriously thinking about driving out there?

i'd go, just short on time and money... a winning lottery ticket could fix both of those problems though :) .

I'm planning to go out there in October when I get back from the Stan.

Same boat as Eric...... personally i'd tow to a place that could easily break almost any part on the rig, not if you take it easy ....... but hey it's YOU.

I think Kyle was talking about going out there and towing.... he has a 2 or 3 car trailer so i'd hit him up if I was you.

I've heard that either Spring or Fall is the time to go because it gets so hot in the summer. Should be an excellent time to drive out west:D

The key is to bring spares of everything that is most likely to break out on the trail, but what is more important than that is to make sure that EVERYTHING on the truck is up to par for driving across the country. Minimal oil leaks, functioning AC, recently serviced bearings and brakes, good tires and spare, etc.

The list of spares / consumables I plan to bring include, but are not limited to:
2 knuckles - one driver and one passenger, with studs, cone washers and nuts included
3 birfields, two of which are fully assembled with inner axle]
2 spare TREs, one right hand thread, one left hand thread
1 spare front leaf spring ( main and second leaf )
Knuckle rebuild kit w/ bearings ( trunion and wheel )
Two gallons of coolant
Two gallons of gear oil
2 quarts ATF
1 quart brake fluid
5lb bucket of moly grease
Grease gun
1 spare u-joint
Spare driveshaft with new u-joints installed
Spare front hub assembly with rotor, free wheel hub, hub selector and bearings
New tub of RTV
100' of electrical wire
Weatherproof crimp connectors
electrical tape
Spare filters ( oil and fuel )
Collection of spare nuts and bolts
Engine belts
Coolant hoses
Tools, lots of tools, manual, pneumatic and electric

Kyle, are you planning on going out west as well?

Thinking............ maybe. Gotta get funds in order. Fuel cost is my major hold up. All those things I could add to my truck. I would probably have a better chance in 2013.

Another major factor is wear and tear on tires
I don't think rockers last that long and u would be putting on around 5k on them

Just something to think about. Most trailer 80s out there are trailered only to save the tires

When I was in cali and talked to Georg at valley hybrids he said that in 2013 there is going to be a huge cruiser rally at the rubicon. Like a 30 yr anniversay of the rubicon opening. I will find out some more information. Just a thought to throw out there.

Fuel is by far going to be the biggest cost. If you went, lots of my spares would work on your rig.

I completely agree with you. I've been thinking over the past couple of weeks how that would work out. Get a small trailer and drag the rockers along with me to Moab is what I was thinking, but what highway tires to use:hhmm:

I was thinking about getting some wheels and running tractor-trailer tires. They should be pretty good on the highway and cheap as you can get retreads for not too much $.

I read about that in the Rubithon 2012 thread here on Mud, but it's good that the idea was confirmed by someone tangible. I'm currently thinking Moab in 2012 and Rubithon in 2013. Thanks for the heads up man:D

I've done the drive 3 times from here. My perspective is skewed, driving in the luxury of the FJC.

Obviously, you need a decent spares kit as you detailed, yes, you will burn some miles off the rubber, yes, you run the risk of trail damage that may need to be fixed to get you home. So be it.

I guess I'm odd but I drive with no rush in mind, sticking the speed to no more than 5 over the limit, mostly 65 mph even in the 70 mph zones. I pumped my Swampers up to 42 to run on the center tread and deal with the bit harsher ride but better rolling resistance.

I also drive the trails keeping in mind to not extend my, nor my vehicle's ability to make sure I can drive it home. With that said, I enjoyed a plethora of trails, challenging the FJC, myself and Regina (the girls just sit and giggle without any issues) and have come back satisified that I tackled the "triple" (Poison Spider, Moab Rim and Golden Spike), Hell's Revenge (including the "gate") and many other less "prominent" trails. Every one of them were amazing, challenging and such unique terrain, its a must do.

I guess I'm reckless but didn't think about it so much, just did it. I feel that there are more reasons to not do it than to do it. Yet, the one overriding reason to do it can't really be explained until you are there, in the middle of the amazing moonscape of Moab. It is then that you won't give a sh!t about how much rubber you lost, how much time it took being on the road or how tired you are of driving through the corn fields of the midwest.

Just do it...

I'm sold. How loud was it driving with the swampers all the way out there?

Guess I don't need tires to make the trip.

Tractor trailer tires ??? I don't think u will find they r cheaper

Just an idea. I have no idea how much they cost.

I just remember why this is a much harder decision as it's one of the few weeks between STR and GSMTR, and I wanted to try and make both this year...... hmmm:confused:

Ramon and I were talking about that this weekend. To make STR and do this, one would have to drive out to STR, do that and then drive straight from there to the west coast. Sounds like a blast:D

Maybe October instead of May?

U are nuts!

That's not the first time someone has called me nuts:D

Maybe October instead of May?

I considered that, but two factors deter me from October. First is that I have friends from NY going out west for Cruise Moab and second is that I want to see the 350 truck spectacle that is cruise moab. :smokin:

Anyone else in?

Bringing this back up again because registration opens in the next week or two.

It seems like half of the GCLCNY TLCA chapter is going and they're all going to rent a house for the week in Moab. If no one from ONSC is planning on going, then I'll meet up with them. So, I'll pose the question again; Is anyone planning on going to Cruise Moab in May? You've got to let me know soon if you are so we can start planning.

I should have a rig this year, saved up enough to afford it and have over 2 months of leave stored up. My problem....I have over 2 months of leave stored up and there is a reason for that. They never let me take it. No way in hell they are going to let me take leave for that long. How about in 2017 when I can get out of the army....is that to far out :)
