The numbers, unfortunately, don't help much. But from the appearance, it looks to be a an old 12,000 lb. winch likely from the mid 1980s. That's when those clutch levers with the black ball knobs were used. It's possible it's an MX12085. Andy

The quality will be the same. In terms of mounting upside down, you can mount it any way you choose so long as the winch rope comes off the bottom of the drum. (If you flip it 180 degrees, it'll be on the top, but the rope must follow that orientation for the brake to work correctly.)...

It's unlikely we'd be able to ID the year with just the motor. I can tell you this: It's no older than 2000 unless the motor was replaced. Looking through old catalogs, in 2000 we went from a finned motor-end housing to a standard one. We changed our logo in 2005, so it's likely this winch's...

Junior80, we typically don't recommend people modifying the product as it can void the warranty. Andy
