Hiace / Dyna Engine Swap - L Series to 1KZ in a Cabovers

I also wanted to ask if anyone knows what the nipple in the blue circle is for? This is on the oil cooler/filter area. I know the green circle is an oil drain, in the manual it explains to use it to drain residual oil during oil filter changes, so pretty sure I can leave that uncapped...

Hiace / Dyna Engine Swap - L Series to 1KZ in a Cabovers

Been a while since I’ve posted an update. I’ve been puttering along slowly while waiting for parts to come in from around the world. All the important stuff is finally here and I was able to drop the engine in, hopefully for the last time, and start working through the smaller details. I got...

Hiace / Dyna Engine Swap - L Series to 1KZ in a Cabovers

The turbo I'm using is this one: https://www.krae4x4.co.nz/shop/toyota-1kz-te-turbo-hi-flow/ It's from the same company I ordered the mechanical pump from. I spoke with them, and they’ve had direct experience with the factory water-to-air intercooler I'll be running. So I figured I’d let them...

Toyota 2L 3L 5L Turbo Install in Cabover Truck

I don't have any other photos and unfortunately I've already removed all of the shifter linkages. In short, the bracket under the turbo had to be moved down a bit. Then the linkage that connects back up to the main shaft was bent I believe, and some steel bar was used to extend it, basically...

Hiace / Dyna Engine Swap - L Series to 1KZ in a Cabovers

Hey, thanks for the reply. I want to use the 1KZ alternator because it's double the amperage (70 vs 35) and the 2L has a vac pump mounted to the back, whereas the 1KZ uses a standalone vac pump. I'm hoping this is the only electrical obstacle I have to work through. Between all the little...

Toyota 2L 3L 5L Turbo Install in Cabover Truck

I just started a new thread for the 1KZ swap. I took rough measurements for the mounts, I'll try to post those and some pictures.

Hiace / Dyna Engine Swap - L Series to 1KZ in a Cabovers

I was dreading having to pull the engine from this truck, but it actually ended up being way easier than I imagined. Although you need to pull it out through the passenger door, everything is easily accessible and very straightforward. A 2 ton crane with the exteneded reach and a swivel hook...

Hiace / Dyna Engine Swap - L Series to 1KZ in a Cabovers

I've been thinking about an engine swap in my LH85 cabover Hiace truck for a while now. The reasons will be obvious if you've ever driven a truck with an L series engine. They're painfully slow and gutless, especially when you add even the lightest of campers. I started out by slapping a...

Toyota 2L 3L 5L Turbo Install in Cabover Truck

Hard to say right now since I don’t know exactly what went wrong. Definitely would have a better air intake situation. 10 psi would be safer than 14, but at the same time plenty of people have no issues at 14. I’m interested to see your setup with the stock manifold, you should post pics once...

1KZ-TE to R Series Bellhousings - Early Version vs Later Version

Early models (KZH106, KZN130, KZJ7X) equipped with the 1KZ-TE engine and R-series transmission used bellhousing 31111-60270, while later versions came with 31111-35100 or 31111-35101—both of which have been superseded by 31111-35102. The early bellhousing (60270) is discontinued and very hard to...

Toyota 2L 3L 5L Turbo Install in Cabover Truck

I really appreciate the recommendations, @Eurasiaoverland and @AussieHJCruza. I hadn’t even considered a B-series engine, but after looking into them, they definitely seem like a great option. The downside is they’re hard to find, expensive, and there’s not a lot of readily available info on...

Toyota 2L 3L 5L Turbo Install in Cabover Truck

Well, I was hoping I’d never have to make this post, but I always knew it was a possibility. Since my truck was the first Hiace pickup/Dyna that I'm aware of to get a turbo installed and others have shown interest in doing the same, I wanted to share an update—for better or worse. The Issue A...

Toyota 2L 3L 5L Turbo Install in Cabover Truck

Another option you might want to consider is the gbc20. I believe it is the same physical size as the gbc17, but might be a better fit for your larger displacement 5L. I'm not sure how the TD04 dimensions compare, but smaller is going to be better when it comes to getting everything packaged.

Toyota 2L 3L 5L Turbo Install in Cabover Truck

Not positive, but I think the GBC17 comes with a 7 PSI wastegate There's only one fuel adjustment screw on these mechanical pumps (that I know of) and it's located on the back of the pump. If yours has never been adjusted, it'll have an anti-tamper ring on it. Some have had success removing...
