That’s just the answer I wanted thanks, I know it’s possible to tune the pump and turbo but unfortunately at the moment it’s out of my skill range, I think a good start would be to get a boost gauge and pyrometer, I don’t suppose you’ve got a link to a suitable one for my vehicle? I wish I knew...
Thanks for replying, If I remember correctly the original normally stays under 10psi, so u think it can safely go up to 14psi? What would happen if it went over 14psi? We talking about knackered turbo or new engine head, I understand since Toyota introduced the turbo on that model it developed...
Hi all
Continuing on the path of resolving power issues on my 1986 round headlight Lj70, I’ve got a reconditioned turbo arriving shortly, hopefully this will help, the last one wasn’t in amazing condition and was spitting a lot of oil. A few people have told me it’s possible to add washers to...
Okeydokey, so basically you’re saying that instead of diverting blow by from the top of rocker cover to turbo intake, I should divert it under the engine and out, then block up the pipe on the turbo intake ? Yeah I realize these engines lack power but when I bought it originally it had more oomph...
Ok thanks, I’m still trying to get to the bottom of lack of power issues so I’m going to replace the turbo, I’ve now found a reasonably priced reconditioned one. As far as the breather tube on the crank case is concerned, currently the pipe is connected to the turbo air in, are you saying to...
The mechanic had forgot to put a vacuum tube back! Theres a T piece that joins up the injection pump to the engine intake and vacuum switch? Anyway he had blocked it off to see if that affected power and left it off, this was stopping the turbo boosting / green light coming on.
Hi there, my round headlamp lj70 1986 2.4td is leaking oil from the turbo and the oil is going into the engine intake manifold, it’s dribbling through the manifold seal. Firstly I’m guessing this is bad for the engine as too much oil during combustion. I’m in the process of getting my turbo...
Ok thanks, I’ve been looking at standard exchange reconditioned turbos which come in at around 350 euros (I’m in France), though I have seen new (possibly Chinese ones) online cheaper than that, I guessed it was best to go with an original but reconditioned instead of an unknown make but you’re...
Thanks for your reply, fuel filter and air filter are almost new. I suspect he has turned up the main fuel screw, that was what he was playing around with.. if he has turned it up too much would that have killed the turbo? It’s been spitting a bit of oil out for a while, it was on my radar to...
Hi all
I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of power problems on my Lj70, it was lacking power lower down in the rev range, when the turbo kicked in (green light working), it was better but still sluggish. I left the vehicle with a garage this morning to tweak the fuel input on the pump, I’ve...

Evening all, I’ve recently bought this old lady and she hasn’t moved for 9 years so I’m working through various problems...
When I put her into 4x4 mode via the H4 button on dash, 50% of the time, the green light doesn’t come on and she won’t go into 4x4. The other 50% of the...
Hi there, when you say the inboard side of the backing plate, what do you mean? The hole is at the top of the backing plate yes and I’ve found the best side to access it is towards the front of the vehicle side of the wheel, is that what you mean? If so it’s still a nightmare to try and see the...
Hi there, it’s rear hand brake shoes and drum, it’s accessing that stopper hole on the backplate to see the star wheel that is causing me problems, maybe if the vehicle was on a lift it would be easier. I just can’t see the star wheel properly to know I’m turning it correctly, perhaps the...
Hi everyone, I’m a Cruiser newbie so just starting the learning process. I’ve got a manual and I’m following it, anyway.. My handbrake was not holding the vehicle, bought new shoes but then after dismantling I realized the old ones were fine, cleaned it all up in the correct way. I adjusted the...
