Pulled the heat shields off to looks for an exhaust leak today (wish I hadn’t… the leak was at one of the Y pipe connectors 😒)
In the process, all but 2 bolts snapped. One on each remains.
Anyone running without them? Is it worth the effort to go through the bolt removal?
Thank you sir. I probably only checked the fuse visually first without removing it; then later removed it to check again once I had gone through everything else and that restored the connection…
I recently left my 80 sitting for about 3 months while I was out of town, with the battery disconnected.
When I came back and I went to start it; the CEL, charge, and A/T all stayed dark when I turned the key… I knew I was in for a fun time. I went straight to jonheld’s guide after having used...
Finally dug into it, yeah it took me a while. Cleaned all the grounds. The battery to engine ground was fairly dirty and the coil(?) to engine ground was loose, the one that comes up and attaches between the front two spark plugs. Also replaced the fusible links as they were pretty worn.
Cranks...
On the vibration/drivability comments that always comes up when a 4bt is mentioned…
I’ve been dreaming of a 4bt powered 80 for a few years. Now that my 80 is about 87% a trail rig these days, I’m closer than ever to pulling the trigger and sitting out one of these 110 degree summers to swap out...
I haven’t touched much yet as I didn’t really know where to start, but based on the post above saying that the wiring looks like it should be there, I’ll have to dig back in back there and find out.
I’ll go through and check/clean all the grounds. I guess the more confusing part was why THAT...
I get in and go to start my Land Cruiser a couple hours ago, but ended up running for a fire extinguisher instead.
My 80 takes a few seconds to start usually, but this time was slower than usual and was cranking for about 8-10 seconds when I see white smoke to my right and smell burning wire...
Thank you! I should have searched a little harder.
Found the thread to modify the mount, ended up grinding a little off the alternator bracket and a little off the ear so I wouldn’t run the risk of taking too much off anything.
Also had to grind out some more space (~1.5”) into the adjustment...

So my voltage regulator seemed to be going out (intermittent overcharging) and I decided to just replace the alt with a cheap reman to get me by for a bit and so I could still make a trip we had planned for this past weekend.
The first alt I ordered was from Rockauto, a cheap Bosch...
Pressure tested the system and found one of the heater hoses was indeed bad along with the lower rad hose.
Just about have everything back together... but I broke off my coolant temp sensor while trying to remove a broken bolt in the thermostat housing. The sensor itself was easy to find. But...
What leads you to believe a stuck thermostat?
After I refilled the coolant, I was able to let the engine idle for about 15min and then drive around for another 15-20min with no sign of getting hot. Right up to operating temp and stayed there. I would think if it was stuck closed then it would...
I’m in STG. Went to Cruiser Outfitters for my lockers and a couple other things a few months back, looks like I’ll hit them up again for a water pump. For $100 it’s a no brainer to avoid tearing everything out again.
I’ll have to look into pressure testing the system, I can turn a wrench but...
