    Backer Plate Eliminator

That’s very helpful, thank you. I think I’ll put the funds toward eliminators. I’m not sure how well the backers would have cleaned up anyway, as they seemed to have taken a bit of abuse while installed. Thanks again!

    Backer Plate Eliminator

Fair enough. I guess the question is really, “if I have to spend money either way, should I spend it to rehab the backer plates, or to buy the eliminators?”

    Backer Plate Eliminator

Disassembled the steering knuckle and disk brake on my 1979 front axle. The backer plate/dust shields are pretty nasty and I was considering getting them blasted and powder coated. However, I see “backer plate eliminators” for sale. Would I be better off getting a set of those, rather than...

    Wheel Selection 16” vs 15”

Yeah, I was hoping to run across someone with a similar wheel style that could tell me what worked for them. Wish I could find the guy that owned this 40 so he could tell me what wheels he was running: Guess I’ll have to use the trial-and-error method.

For Sale 1979 FJ40 Front Cowl, Western WA

Hi Mike. The frame has quite a bit of rust that seems worse than just surface rust. Once I get the tub removed I’ll take a wire wheel to some of it and post some pics. Anything in particular you’d like to see?

For Sale  1979 FJ40 Front Cowl, Western WA

Stripping what’s left of this 1979 FJ40. Cowl appears to be in pretty solid shape. $200 OBO for that. Most of this will go to scrap if no one is interested. I also have the hood, but it’s not in pristine condition.

    Wheel Selection 16” vs 15”

I hope I don’t catch too much flak, as I know this is a common question. I understand the correct backspacing for 15” wheels is 3.5” to clear tie rod ends and what not, but can I get away with a 4” BS on a 16” rim? This is the style I’m going for, but I haven’t found any that have 3.5” BS, 16”...

    1979 2F Rebuild Questions

Picked up the reground cam and lifters today at Delta Cam. Super nice guys and very responsive. Glad they were able to salvage my stock parts to help get this old motor running again.

    1979 Calipers: Rebuild or Aftermarket?

I believe you answered this in a later thread, but does this require any modifications to the axle or caliper, or is it a straight “bolt-on” application? What model year range of 4Runner calipers work best for this? Also, with respect to the wheels having room, I’d like to go with a 16” rim to...

    1979 2F Rebuild Questions

Got it all apart and dropped off with my machinist. Waiting to hear how much boring he needs to do in the cylinders before I start hunting for appropriately oversized pistons. I know the oversized domed pistons are extremely rare at this point and may end up having to buy the custom Wisecos.

    1979 Calipers: Rebuild or Aftermarket?

Pulled these crusty calipers off my 79’ donor vehicle. Wire wheeled one out of curiosity and seems like they could cleanup just fine. My question is, are these cylinders and pistons beyond saving? Am I better off just buying aftermarket calipers and investing the time/money I would have spent to...

Steam Cleaning Parts in Western WA

Anyone know of a place in western Washington that will steam clean parts? I have a transmission and transfer case off my donor vehicle that is hopelessly caked with grease and grime. I simply don’t have the time to tackle it with elbow grease but want to keep my project moving. I’m in Olympia...

    1979 2F Rebuild Questions

Delta Cam is local to me and I’ve seen them mentioned as a good option for cam work. I’ve got quite a bit of rust on the cam, and the lifters have some discoloration but seem like they might be able to be cleaned up. I’ll definitely get the block cleaned up. What specifically should I be...
