SUCCESS PS install is done!!! Amazing difference; hard to believe how easy it is to steer with the front locked now, I can easily palm the wheel full lock to full lock.
John thank you for your write up, because of your help getting everthing needed on the 1st attempt made this job easy.
All of the local Auto parts suppliers said they could not get the box. Searched on line to see if I could find anything, who would have guessed it; found a re-maned Saginaw gear box on Amazon.
Thanks for the response Byron;
Same result however. My NAPA guys cross referenced this number also, both factories say they are out of stock indefinitely.
I figure it's most likely due to lack of core returns, they just don't have any to rebuild.
Are there other Saginaw box options that anyone...
1 YEAR + RESURRECTION!!!!
I'm starting to gather parts for my Power Steering project; local NAPA tells me that the factory says the Saginaw box # listed at the beginning of this tread is no longer available!!!
Has anyone else encountered this, or are my local NAPA guys just that bad?
I was...
It must be the day for 40 series success, my 40 is also running!!!
Started from scratch, cleaned and or replace all connections and grounding surfaces, put everything back to the original configuration and ran diagnostics. Finally identified the old coil was bad, replaced it tightened...
Okay I've manually grounded the - post with a bypass wire nothing out of the coil wire. I bypassed the igniter, keyed direct power to the + on the coil, jumper from - side to ignition, I get a weak orange spark out of the coil wire to ground when the engine is turned over. not enough to fire the...
I did check the coil wire to block, no spark that's when I changed the coil, still no spark that's when I changed the points, still no spark, so now I'm ready to bypass the igniter altogether.
I'll keep you posted.
Not a doctor, just frustrated!!!
No spark from the coil was initial "diagnosis" (a little tongue in cheek there) going to tackle it again this evening.
Plan on starting from scratch this evening, going to double check all the wiring, reset the points and get the rig running. Then upgrades are in my future.
Not a lot of option for 40 parts here in Kansas, anyone have a good ideas where I should go for a 60 series ignition?
Plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, are all fairly new put a tune up on it this spring, truck has ran like new until we experienced the extreme heat over the last 2 weeks.
The reason I believe it is the igniter is the 12 volts at both of the coil posts, and the fact that the coil circuit wouldn't...
At this point I'm pretty sure it's the igniter that has failed.
I'm looking for the best way to wite around or by pass the igniter to get the engine running.
Is there a basic point gap set, and wiring configuration that will get the truck running without the igniter
Okay here goes, I have had this 77 model 40 for about a year and a half.
It has always ran great, until this summer 105 - 110 for 2 weeks straight, it began running really rough when first started but would smooth out and run great once warmed up. This past weekend however it didn't smooth out...
