Decided to make up a thread on my toy more like a journal, so that I can keep track on what I do and surely get...
I am doing partly the same thing (together with changing the waterpump, thermostat, and fluid), so I disconnected the hose from the top part of the housing and I was able to fit a wrench and slowly back the screw out.

I know of a BJ73 restored by an aquaintance, all works documented on a local forum (all body work has been done with a lot of patience and the necessary skill, with lockers and a winch, interior restored too, and a historic vehicle title which means no tax at all and cheap insurance) sold a few...
If you look at vehicles here in the EU you may find a few promising "stories"... the kind that make you want to get on the plane and see for yourself... until you go see them, then the story may change completely to a not so great story... and there is at least a 50% chance for that to happen...
How about the turbo from the 3.0 D4d ?
i recall it’s also a VNT turbo (also watercooled which might just add some problems). I rememeber getting a quote from a turbo shop, around 280 Euro to rebuild the core. Also vacuum operated and reliable from what I’ve heard.
