I too think the OEM 18's are a great looking wheel. Unfortunately the specs limit the practical tire size to 275/70.

Very classy approach! Do you ride it in the wet? Mine felt sketchy on anything other than dry pavement. I miss riding mine, I put a grip of miles on this thing when I lived in Seattle. I need to re-gear and re-tire it to make sense in Santa Fe. 1981 Schwinn Voyageur

Reminds me of the old adage, "It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" I got my hardtail primarily for bikepacking. It's like my 100 series, not big on character but I never worry about something going wrong way out in the boonies.

Gears are definitely an advantage but a single speed with the right gearing is surprisingly capable.

Looks pretty much the same to everyone else but every aspect has been gone through and/or upgraded since Pearl. It works 100% better. I’m taking it to Marin County in a week for the 50th anniversary of Repack, the first ever mtb downhill race!

When "sliding" it's going to put all the stress on the body mounts, IMO not a great idea.
