When I rebuild these systems, I always replace the expension valve. It's a couple hour job the first time you have to pull a hdj81 A/C box, but for a $10 part, worth it. I would start there.

I second this. You may as well replace the radiator too. After 30 years, a lot of them are physically deteriorating. Order an Agility #8011469 on RockAuto. It will run you <$250, fits perfectly on 1HDT trucks. I've installed two of them and the quality is pretty good.

You don't need to worry about BEBs on an FT. Absolutely not. These are cold-blooded engines. Any overheating of a 1HDxx is unusual. Next thing to replace is your thermostat. I have seen them get stuck intermittently. PN# 9091603089 can be ordered from your local domestic Toyota dealer for <$25...
