1KZTE prechamber rattle, anyone heard of this?

Still getting rattling after my head was replaced and faulty injector replaced. Shop that did it claims the prechambers can come loose and it sounds like an injector rattle but it's actually the prechamber. They claimed that although it sounds weird it causes no harm.

Engine runs fine otherwise. Not as smooth as before the head and injectors were done, but no smoke, no miss, no cold start issues. Rattle mostly goes away once the engine warms up.

I am skeptical. If this is a legit thing and causes no harm, I'll probably just live with it. If it's a problem I need to have it dealt with while still under warranty.

Really wish I'd DIY'd all this.

Not sure about rattle, but the pre chambers in my 3B were coming loose, eventually hammered into the piston slowly, exhaust gasses undermined the head gasket below the chamber and eroded the engine block into a large paperweight.

Also, the pre-chambers should be tight in the head for maximum heat transfer.

On some engines at least I've see a spec on pre-chamber protrusion, and from memory it's either flush, or something tiny like +0.05 mm.

On aftermarket heads it looks like they normally machine the surface after the chambers are pressed in, so there should be no room for them to rattle around. I also think it's unlikely to be the cause, but if they are moving, that is definitely bad.

On my 3B head I could see carbon from combustion gases coming around the chamber in the head. It ruined the engine block beyond repair which I was pretty annoyed about, as the engine block was the only bit of the engine I wanted to keep.

no I've never head of that, loose would not be a good thing. pretty sure they can't fall out of a 1kz head because the head gasket/block also keeps them in. Any chance there are cheap injector nozzles installed? poorly or unfiltered fuel tearing them up already? was this a genuine or china aftermarket head?

Injectors were what came to my mind too, especially since I'd already had issues with them. Had the injectors rebuilt while they were out to have the head replaced, and supposedly they were rebuilt by a reputable shop in the area - same shop I'd send them to if I had them rebuilt myself. One injector was faulty, peeing before it popped, and was replaced. Got conflicting info on whether the faulty injector was rebuilt again, or replaced with "known good" and my rebuilt injector is who knows where.

Got conflicting info on whether it was a Chinese or Taiwanese head. I was assured they did a head a week and had a machine shop well versed in these motors that swapped over everything and set it all up?

Fuel and filter is the same as it's run the entire rest of the time I've had the vehicle, no issues. Wouldn't surprise me if the shop introduced contamination directly to the injectors while installing them. They screwed up enough other things, nothing would surprise me at this point.

To say I'm annoyed with this whole experience would be a vast understatement. Have wished I'd DIY'd a couple thousand times. Shop has 4.7 stars and I have no clue how. As far as I can tell there's one guy there who knows what he's doing and everyone else should be selling Tupperware door to door.

It's not that the pre-chambers fall out (unless they disintegrate), but if they are undersized for the bore in the head, they can start to rock and hammer the piston/block. The head gasket on my 3B (which was for a 14B, so did not have the ridges to put extra pressure on the pre-chambers, thanks to useless mechanics here) was distorted where the pre-chambers were starting to come out (very bad on cylinder #1, but starting on all other cylinders).

But I agree that the noise is more likely to be due to injectors.

And frankly, whether it's injectors or pre-chambers or anything else that was not evident before they rebuilt the engine, I think the shop should be sorting it out.

start with re doing the injectors with denso parts , if that doesnt fix it pull the head off, simple as that
Prechambers, if not really tight, are suppossed to be staked in, meaning basically hitting them on the edge with a chisel to lock them in

It was just a head replacement, not a full rebuild. I agree that in theory they should make it right, I'm just so stinking hesitant to let them touch the vehicle again.

Prechambers were staked in on the new head they showed me.

Think current plan is isolate which cylinder is making the noise, swap the injector on that cylinder with another cylinder, see if the noise follows the injector. If it does, send the injectors back out or source new ones. If it doesn't, yeah the head is going to have to come off.
