in case anyone finds this thread and has the same problem, I have found the solution. For some reason there was a lot of wear on the alternator pulley, specially the outside groove. Its a bit of work to get the alternator out and an impact gun is nice to have, but generally not too difficult...

Hey gang, I'm a new owner of 78 series troopy from 2011 with a 1HZ engine. to have peace of mind, im doing the replacemnet of most of the components that have wear and tear and no service history from the previous owner. I'm stationed in europe and have been recently replacing the drive belts...
