Thanks for the replies. Mine do not have a nut, the procedure described above including the 'persuasion' worked like a charm.

Searched but could not find and answer applicable to my unit. How do I remove the wiper arms so I can remove the whole assembly? They are mounted at the top of the windshield and there is no cover over a nut. See pic, thanks!
