Installing hydro assist using a west texas offroad modified scout box and a their 6" stroke, 1.5" diameter ram. Two pics only, more pending next week...

Nice U bolts..

:flipoff2:

Glad to see you finally going hydro assist!

You will LIKE :D Do you have hoses? Or the an -6 fittings for the ram. I have both and can fire em off Monday if you need them. If you are gonna make hoses be sure to use the steel power steering (hi pressure) rated stuff.

more picutres to come?

pics pending...full testing at CM04 and VERY pleased with it....never one instance where the steering was bound up.

However, the install will be changing very soon...switching from AllPro histeer arms to some from 4x4Labs....will rework things for BEHIND the axle now!

Jack, did you ever determine what caused that to happen?

The Redneck Ram needs a bit more beef in my opinion

Umm, do you have a pic of how you mounted it before it bent???

Woody, no, I still can't figure out exactly what happened. I had just popped up that ledge before Rocker Knocker and was turning on what I thought was fairly even slickrock. Here is a pic, Mace, of the mounting. I would be tickled if you could see something in the mounting that would contribute.

So it bent backwards towards the rear of the truck correct?
What put the scratches in the "front" of the ram?
You were basically on flat ground right, not flexed out??

This is why I love the $35.00 el cheapo rams. Not as pretty but they are STURDY!! Much thicker shank..

Were you trying to turn very fast?

I know, a lot of questions.. I wish I had been there to see what happened..
:(

HOw thick is your steering arm? Less than 1/2"?

8" ram right?

an example of this ram mace?

http://www.baileynet.com/

That will get you the Chief for $47.00
If you call them up you can get the Maxium tie rod cylinder for the 30 something price.

I have one on the front of my cruiser.

It is also a VERY cheap way to make a double ended cylinder.

There are lots of reasons, Having heims on both ends is very nice. The welded cylinders "look" cleaner
The TRE cylinder is a bit bulky..

Or you specifically need a certain sized unit. (with my old LC front axle my steering arms were really short. So I needed a 1.5x4" throw ram)

And if you just like spending money get the AGR unit and plan on replacing seal pretty often..

So hydro assist can be had pretty cheaply....?
anyone ever tapped (is it possible) a minitruck P/S box?

Yes and Yes,

If you search the mini truck board on Pirate you will get lots of info on it :D

But honestly before you go hydro assist just boost the pressure a-la west texas off road and see if htat helps enough.

I think we have definitely succeeded in hijacking Woody's original thread.... The hydraulic "experts" I have been talking to say that the rod should be half the diameter of the cylinder. I think I will try one of the cheap AG units with a 2" bore, 8" stroke and 1" rod.

I would not recommend going to hydro-assist unless you have tires over 38" and you wheel hard. You don't need it for smaller tires or mild wheeling and the downsides will be disappointing IMO.

Exactly, with 33's you would probably not enjoy the real benefits of hydro assist.

Jack, get the $30something dollar one from Baileynet.com. That is the one that I have and I cannot imagine it bending. Also, it would not be hard to retrofit the end of the shank for your TRE. Although it looks like you could drill out your steering arm for the other end of the clevis..

my motivations are (though only on 33 inchers) are that standard ps won't let you break snow banks loose when your trying to saw through, and digging out of axle deep ruts. i've been in both of these situations where my ps won't do anything but squeal the belt... and yes the tension is tight.
