Well I'm continuing with my theory that nothing works better to shake out the bugs (or build confidence) than driving the piss out of the 45. So after cruiserbrett sorted out some serious dizzy and carb issues and the rig was running like an absolute champ, I decided to load up my snowboard and gear and set off for another 45 adventure 700 miles round trip.

I have a buddy in town from South Africa and was supposed to go on an annual boarding trip (this time to Mammoth) but decided against it, until.... a-ha! I could drive the 45 up and surprise these fockers!

Well I finished a couple of projects the previous two days at work (added second wiper motor/added heater/added coolant overflow bottle) and I was on my way...

Left Santa Monica at 815am...

Drove up with a little cloud cover but otherwise perfect...

Stopped to check out the local 45 in the mountains that has 100 notes left on it about wanting to buy it. Spoke to the kids who's dad owns the place and they said it's not his. This thing has been discussed at length but I was hoping I could park next to it for a pic but there's no space. It's pinned between a fence and a trailer...

Sadly pushed off without a pic of the 45's together and headed the rest of the way up...

The 45 ran like a champ, never got hot and got about 14 MPG (although I haven't done a speedo correction to see how many miles I REALLY went with the 33's). The only tough spot was the last grade on 395 heading into Mammoth Lakes. It's about an 8 mile stretch and the truck was struggling up the hill at 40 MPH (otherwise the 55-60 range with an occasional 50 MPH hill). For those of you with a 135 and 3 speed you know that is no mans land, too slow for 3rd gear and absolutely screaming in 2nd but we made it, arriving about 2pm, 310 miles later.

Pulled up to the Westin and had to explain how to drive truck to the Valet...

After knocking on the door to my buddies room and shocking the hell out of them they were floored when I told them what I drove up. They think I'm crazy.

Got a few good days of boarding in with good weather and nicely groomed snow but no powder as there hasn't been a storm in quite some time. After packing up and heading downstairs the obvious call that I was waiting for came...

The valet can't figure out your car. Ha Ha. So I went down to the heated garage, and pulled it around front again. Just then one of the girls (an Aussie) from the front desk came out and was amazed to see it. She went on to say that her grandfather had one on each of his gold mines in Queensland and that she hadn't seen one since! Nice.

Posed for a quick pic with all my buds and started back home at 3pm...

Pretty smooth trip home as well...

Stopped in Independence for a pic with an old steam engine...

Another wave at the 45 with the original KOITO headlights...

...and I was home after driving 370 miles by 1030.

Hmmmm..... where should we go next?

Dom,

We were camping just north of Dove Springs off of the 14 (1/2 mile from the Schmidt tunnel rd.), I saw you drive by, but I did not have any cell service. The day before I saw a sprung-over, blue, 45LWB, V8, with Pinto tail lights heading up to Schmidt Tunnel.

Showing the ol' girl some love by taking her on a road trip, very nice!!!!

Nice trip report - That brown 45 up on the 395 is probally is one of the biggest draws in that town. Kind of like an unoffical rite, we all stop to pay our respects and leave a note - begging for ownership. Guess we all are not worthy:D.

That is totally cool. Didn't take you long to get it going and putting miles on it. Looking good to. Hope to have mine going this summer.

Dom very cool !!! next time let me know when your going out. I still need to dirve down your way, I should have that carb next week I have just been working alot. Great pics and i am looking forward to making a trip to Dago :steer:

Grats bud - That looks like a lot of fun. I hope you had 10 times the fun it looks. I hope too to have some pictures to upload.

You see, it's not just owning and wrenching on these things - it's the stories and adventures that makes them sink into me. I love it.

So cool Dom

later - dallas

FYI - Interested to know about how you did the coolant reservoir.

I think I figured 1.15 to 1.2 vs. stock 29-30" tires times the speedometer miles travelled with 33's.. 16 ish?

Nice pics.

Did you look over the fence at the cruiser stop?

Been there, done that. Then I got invited into the backyard for a look around.;)

Every Cruiser head on 395 has stopped and talked or that guy or his kid. here are shots I took three years ago. If you look close, you will see my other two projects at the time. The Green micro and the yellow breast barely in the frame.

Imagine the day one of us drives by and it's not there! BTW, cool trip and I love the Westin and Mammoth.

This truck has to be the most photographed 45 on the Mud board

Thanks for checking out the trip report. I had a blast! Seriously need to get it out and rolling up the coast... to Oregon maybe?

glad it ran well! I think cruise moab 09 should be the next destination...

Well, maybe..... I need to take a few spring packs out before I do a REAL long trip.

I saw you drive by...

That's crazy Tony. What are the chances?

Mark-

I do need to get this thing out and off the beaten path a bit. Not sure I agree with the squeeze, but somewhere for sure. :grinpimp:

Avatar change was a good suggestion but I'll use this until I get a 45 action shot.

So the real question is,

Did you get a speeding ticket, or even come close?

Uh, no. They could have ticketed me for unsafe slow driving up the last grade to Mammoth though...

This truck has to be the most photographed 45 on the Mud board

I agree. It's a nice rig with lots of bits and pieces I wish lived in my garage.

I'll be sure to post up my next adventure. How much to bring this to South Africa with me for 3 weeks?

Stay tuned....

thats awesome, just took my 40 to lake tahoe this weekend. it was a blast other that just one wiper and no heater! i agree though, sometimes you just gotta drive the piss out of these things to shake the bugs lose.:steer:
