1977 FJ40 has not been started since summer of 2007 when I left for Afghanistan. It wouldn’t turn over after sitting for a year, so I pushed it into the back of the garage (thinking I was going to rebuild it) and haven’t messed with it since (3-27-13 updated below: I have messed with it. It runs now but has a knock). It has a OME lift, Weber 32/36 carb, Man-a-fre header and exhaust, Detroit locker in rear, 33x12.5 BFGs on 10” steel rims. Soft top and soft doors included but it’s probably missing some minor parts. No hard top. Pictures at Picasa Web Albums - John - 1977 FJ. The truck is in the garage under a pile of stuff (3-27-13: not anymore, it's outside now), so pictures are limited, but I can take more for a serious inquiry. It has tow bar mounts on the bumper and I’ll include the tow bar, so it will be easy to flat tow it. I also have an extra set of FJ40 axles which I will throw in with the truck, but will also sell separately if someone wants them. Looking for $2500 for the FJ40, soft top, tow bar, and extra axles.

The winch mount and cable shown in the pictures are not include in sale.

I have the original rims if anyone is interested.

Thanks JBlackmon. It is tough to let it go, but, unfortunately, it's time to move on. I appreciate your comments.

Hi lokiset,

It was running fine in summer of 2007 before I parked it but I didn't drain the fuel or take any storage precautions. I think (and hope) there is nothing seriously wrong with the engine, but I think coming to Colorado all the way from BC with the intent to fix it and drive it all the way back, in winter, sounds like a risky proposition. There is a lot that could go wrong with that plan and I wouldn't want you or me to end up in a bad transaction. My apologies if that comes across as insulting in any way, because I want to sell the vehicle, but cannot guarantee its road-worthiness or predict what it will take to make it ready for a trip of that length. There could be (read: almost surely) is other maintenance needed (like tires, hose rot, fluid replacement, new battery, etc) before it would be ready to go. Heck, I'd hesitate before driving any FJ40 that far in winter even if it hadn't been sitting as long as mine.

You could always flat-tow it or have a shipper haul it up there. I'll sell it to you if you show up with cash (US not CDN ;)), but I really don't know what's wrong or have the time to be wrenching on it to get it running. If I did I wouldn't be selling it.

Like I said, I want it to sell, but want to make sure its a square deal for both of us. The rig comes "as-is" for the listed price.

Thanks for your question. Maybe we can work something out with shipping or towing if you're still interested.

Still available

Still available. Offers? A few people have been "interested", but no takers yet.

I hadn't thought of it before, but I could tow it within a reasonable distance for the cost of fuel. C'mon . . . you know you need another project.

As an added bonus, if you act fast you can paint a heart on the hood and claim it is for your significant other for Valentine's Day :D

I may be headed that way this summer, probably making a trip to Carlsbad to visit friends in June/July. If it's still for sale I'll contact you when and if it happens. Unfortunately I don't have much time between now and summer be messing with it. There's a chance I can get it running by the time June rolls around. Thanks

OK keep me in mind.

Folks, this vehicle is no longer for sale. I had one of the best afternoons I can remember digging into this thing. It is in better shape than I remembered. Still not running, but it is on the verge. I pulled the plugs and put a bit of oil in each cylinder and turned the engine by hand. Drained the gas. Changed the oil and fuel filter. It's ready to run, but I mistakenly gave the key to the person who I sold my FJ62 to. Hopefully I'll get the key back tomorrow and put some fresh gas in and fire her up.

There's no way I cam part with this rig now. My 12 y/o daughter is thrilled and wants it to be "her" vehicle. I see a frame up rebuild in the future. Thanks for your interest and support.

good to hear John. I knew it wouldn't take too much to get it going again.

awesome for you! bad for me. :) I wanted a project!! let me know if you need some help or change your mind...

Running now

Thanks guys. I got it fired up today and took a couple laps around the neighborhood. Of course all the kids climbed aboard. The soft top is on and it is moved out to the driveway now. Had to pull the ignition to start it with a screwdriver because I can't get the key back until Tuesday. It turned over on the first try. There's still a lot of work to be done on it, but some progress is better than none I guess. And I have a little room in the garage now.

Something about these rigs gets into you . . . but you already know that.

Congrats on the new cruiser! ;)

Yep, good work. Can tell it's 'going' to a good home. Glad you're keeping it.

Back on the market.

This rig is back on the market. Best laid plans and all that, it turns out that in the past couple years I never got around to doing much more than moving it to the driveway and driving around the neighborhood a few times. Now that I got a new job and have to move, my family has come to terms that there is no time or space for the FJ40. Sad but true. On the plus side, here's a good opportunity for someone to take on a project that shouldn't be too difficult. This truck has some problems for sure: needs new tires, new steering box and new main bearings. The good: it starts and runs, some rust but it's not horrible.

I have a tow bar (included) so you can tow it home and get to work right away;) I wouldn't try to drive it on the road. I'll consider reasonable offers, but $2,500 seems fair. I trust you all will let me know if it is not.

I've added a few update pictures and this thread should give all the background and details.

Thanks!

John
